Cavalier King Charles' are an affectionate breed of dog and make for wonderful family companions. They are known for their kind and gentle nature, as well as for their classic long, silky flowing coats. One of the more interesting facts about them is that, unlike many other breeds, they don't shed, thanks to their single-layer coat. They also have iconic, heart-shaped faces, which makes them especially appealing to look at. Cavalier King Charles' are typically very easy to train, owing to their generally amiable and open personality.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are actually a low-shedding breed that very rarely sheds throughout the year. They require regular brushing during the year to maintain their fur and their coats, which helps minimize shedding. While there's no guarantee of a non-shedding breed, Cavaliers are one of the breed's least likely to shed. They gain new fur through the year, rather than losing it, and the breed typically doesn't experience major shedding during season changes. With regular brushing and grooming, Cavaliers can maintain healthy coats and a non-shedding status longer.
The best diet for a Cavalier King Charles is high-quality, nutritionally balanced, specifically formulated for small-breed puppies or adult dogs. Treats can be given, but should be limited to 10% of the total calorie intake for the day. Whole grains such as brown rice and oats should be included, as well as vegetables, and fresh, lean meats and fish. Cald and dry kibble should have 40-50% protein content, and formulations rich in omega-3 fatty acids may be beneficial.
