Questions & Answers
One of the most interesting aspects of the Cavalier King Charles breed is its history. The breed has a Royal lineage traceable directly back to King Charles II, during the late 17th century. During this time, these dogs were seen as a sign of great wealth and status, exhibited in several Renaissance paintings. As such, they remain to this day one of the most recognizable and popular toy breeds. In addition, the Cavalier King Charles' sweet and gentle personality, and its general love of people, make it a great companion for just about anyone.
The Cavalier King Charles is blessed with a beautiful, silky coat. Its long, luxurious fur has a sheen to it and comes in four different colors – Blenheim, Ruby, Black and Tan and Tricolor. It ranges from light to deep in color, depending on the type of coat the individual Cavalier has. The coat also typically has a feathering effect around the ears, chest, feet and legs, giving the dogs a unique and distinguished look.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs are known to have a great appetite. They typically eat a well-balanced diet of dry kibble supplemented with a few canned or fresh foods. Small breed formulas of both kibble and wet food should be chosen to ensure proper nutrition. Human foods such as fruits, vegetables, cooked eggs, and dairy products can also be used as occasional treats. Dogs should be provided with fresh water at all times and food dishes should be placed in an area where the dog can not be disturbed during meal times.
Before buying a Cavalier King Charles, it is essential to purchase food and water bowls, a bed or cushion, a leash and a collar, a brush for grooming, toys, and treats. Additionally, acquiring an ID tag with your contact information is absolutely necessary in the event that your pup gets lost. Moreover, acquiring a few weeks' worth of food and premium quality dog food is essential to keeping your pup healthy and nourished. It is also important to have on hand a shampoo specifically designed for dogs, nail clippers, and a toothbrush.
While Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are typically considered smallto medium-sized dogs, their size can vary. The American Kennel Club considers Cavaliers to be on the larger end of the small dog breeds with males generally weighing 13–18 pounds and females weighing 12–17 pounds. However, they can exceed the average size depending on genetics, diet, and environment. In addition, a person's perception of a dog's size can differ depending on the size of other dogs they have encountered.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered an active breed that needs daily physical and mental stimulation. These pups love to play with their people and enjoy activities like sporting events, hikes, and leisurely walks. Due to their small size, they typically don't need a lot of exercise to stay in shape, but that doesn't mean these dogs are lethargic! With the right amount of exercise, they can stay fit and be very playful and affectionate companions.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels make great first-time pets due to their gentle and loyal nature. They are often referred to as the perfect lapdog because they love being in the company of their owners and, although they are active, they are also very content to just relax and snuggle. They are also relatively small and will not require a lot of space, making them a great fit for most homes. When it comes to training, these dogs are smart and are eager to please, making them very easy to work with.
Training your Cavalier King Charles can be relatively easy due to their willingness to learn, but it should also be done with patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. A good starting point is to form a bond with the dog and ensure that it trusts you and will follow your commands. It is also important to establish ground rules and rules of behavior from the beginning. Training should be done with short and frequent training sessions each day in a quiet area with few distractions. Begin with teaching basic commands like 'sit', 'stay', and 'come', and reward the dog with treats for good behavior.
