Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles is a breed of small spaniel-type dogs that originated in the United Kingdom. While they may look like a regular lapdog, Cavalier King Charles are active and loves exercise and will need regular walks and energy-building activities to stay healthy. They are obedient, loyal, and full of affection and make ideal family pets. Cavaliers can live up to 13 years and the size of them ranges from 12-15 pounds. Although they do need to spend some time alone, Cavaliers love to be around people and will quickly become part of the family.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a long, luxurious coat that is soft to the touch. Typically, the breed's coat is of the long "blenheim" variety, with a unique white and tan splashed color. The "tricolor" variety, which is sometimes referred to as "Black and Tan," is black and tan in color. The "ruby," which is sometimes referred to as "Red and White," is predominately red in color.
When it comes to feeding your Cavalier King Charles, there are certain items you should avoid in order to keep your pup healthy. These include grapes, raisins, chocolate, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts, avocado, and alcohol. Another item that is not good for your Cavalier King Charles is any product that contains the artificial sweetener xylitol. This artificial sweetener is highly toxic to dogs and can cause vomiting, lethargy, seizures, and even liver failure.
To ensure you are fully prepared for your Cavalier King Charles, you should first research everything you can about the breed before bringing your pup home. Educate yourself on physical characteristics of the breed, the amount of exercise, grooming and general care that your pup will need. Additionally, it's important to make your home dog-friendly with the necessary tools and supplies such as food and water dishes, toys, bedding, a crate, and a collar or harness.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels usually range in size from around 12-13 inches in height at the shoulder when full grown. Generally these friendly dogs can weigh as much as 18-19 pounds, although a few may be slightly heavier. As an adult, they tend to have a longer body than is typical for their height, making them look larger than they actually are. All in all, the average size of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel makes them perfectly suited for living in a smaller home, apartment, or similar abode.
Taking your Cavalier King Charles running is not necessarily the most ideal situation, as the breed is not designed for strenuous physical exercise. The breed originated as lapdogs and therefore is not likely to have the stamina or energy to keep up with faster breeds. To be safe, it is best to take your Cavalier King Charles on leisurely walks and short jogs that are interspersed with drinking breaks. As long as you are monitoring your pet and keeping an eye on their wellbeing, the occasional run should be manageable.
Generally, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are an excellent choice for families with children as they are gentle, affectionate, and patient by nature. Additionally, these dogs are known to get along well with both older kids and toddlers, making them an ideal pet for families. Since they usually have an even temper, they tend to pick up on their owners' moods, and also do best in homes where there is love and compassion. They make good watchdogs as well, alarm barking when it senses something suspect.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a reputation for being extremely intelligent and loving dogs. They are often described as thoughtful dogs that are eager to please their owners. They also tend to be quick learners, so owners can make use of positive reinforcement and basic obedience training to achieve amazing results. Cavaliers are exceptionally intuitive, making them great companions and alert watchdogs. They relish mental stimulation and can learn tricks, play hide-and-seek, and even take part in agility or canine sports.
