Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a beloved breed of dog in the toy family. Their ancestors were bred by King Charles II of England specifically for companionship, hence their name! These sweet-natured little dogs love nothing more than snuggling up with their humans, but they have plenty of charms in addition to being great lap dogs. They have a playful spirit and are highly intelligent, making them easy to train. They are also very photogenic, with their fluffy coats, black eyes and droop ears.
Cavalier King Charles dogs are notoriously hypoallergenic so managing allergies should be relatively easy. As always, it's best to be aware and take a few precautions. First, ensure your Cavalier's coat is well taken care of and brushed regularly. Wipe their coat down with a damp cloth to remove any dust, pollen, or dander from outside. Regular baths and grooming will help keep allergens away from you and your home.
You should not feed your Cavalier King Charles snacks such as chips, crackers, cookies, and candy as they are high in unhealthy fats, calories and sugar that can cause gastrointestinal issues. Fruits like grapes, raisins, and currants should also be avoided as these can be toxic and can lead to potentially serious health issues. Dairy products, including milk, cheese and yogurt, should also be avoided as this breed is often lactose intolerant.
Becoming the best puppy parent for a Cavalier King Charles involves four key elements exercise, nutrition, training, and socialization. When it comes to exercise it is important to ensure they get enough of it to help them maintain a healthy weight. Additionally, offering them a variety of activities, such as walks, trips to the park, or even playing with them in the backyard, can help strengthen the bond they have with you. It is also important to ensure your pup is fed a high-quality, balanced diet that meets their nutritional needs.
The size of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy depends a great deal on the parents' size and which breed they are mixed with. On average, they weigh about 13 to 18 pounds and measure between 12 to 13 inches tall at their shoulder. A healthy diet and regular exercise should keep your puppy within those recommendations. While the growth of your puppy may be hard to predict, as they all mature differently, you can expect your Cavalier to be fully grown by 14-16 months of age, with the smoother coat of an adult by about 8 months.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are generally known to enjoy swimming, especially during the hot summer months! This breed in particular is a water baby at heart, taking on tasks like retrieving objects from the water or diving with enthusiasm. They love to follow their owners into the lake, river or ocean for a fun day of paddling. Furthermore, there have been instances of Cavaliers swimming out to retrieve a thrown stick from the middle of a lake showing just how good these dogs are at not only swimming, but also the basic obedience commands many owners work on teaching their canine companions.
Cavalier King Charles typically get along reasonably well with kids. They tend to have an easy-going and gentle nature, so they often display patience and affection towards children. With proper socialization, Cavaliers are apt to become comfortable and enjoy spending time with younger family members. It is important to remember, however, that all dogs should be supervised and never be left unsupervised with a child, regardless of breed. As long as the introductions are done slowly and carefully, your Cavaliers should do fine.
Training your Cavalier King Charles is an important part of having a happy and healthy pup! To ensure your pup is getting the right amount of activity, most experts recommend about 15-20 minutes of direct exercise per day. This can include activities such as walking, playing fetch, agility and obedience training. On top of the 15-20 minutes of exercise, you should also provide your pup with another 30 minutes of mental stimulation per day, such as engaging activities like hide and seek or puzzle games. These activities are essential for keeping your Cavalier King Charles’s mind exercised.
