Questions & Answers
One of the most interesting things about Cavalier King Charles Spaniels is their long, storied history. They originated in England during the 16th and 17th centuries and were bred from King Charles Spaniels and a variety of toy spaniels. They were favored by royalty and almost went extinct due to the popularity of Pugs and French Bulldogs. Today, these dogs are popular for their friendly, gentle disposition and endearing appearance. They make wonderful companions and get along well with children and other animals.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are generally considered to be non-shedding breeds. This means that they tend to produce less dander and pet hair overall, with the exception of seasonal shedding around twice a year. Seasonal shedding usually occurs in the spring and fall, and at the heaviest it usually amounts to a light coat of down. While the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is considered a low-shedding breed, regular grooming is still important to help keep their coat healthy and to reduce shedding overall.
Feeding your Cavalier King Charles the right diet is an important part of keeping them healthy. Choose a quality dry kibble that is specifically formulated for the breed and life stage of your dog. Make sure the food is high in protein and contains fatty acids for healthy skin and coat. You may also want to supplement their diet with occasional wet food, fresh fruits, or cooked veggies as a healthy treat. Avoid processed foods, like human snacks, as it can cause health problems. Remember to also provide fresh, clean water at all times.
Before you bring your new Cavalier King Charles home, you'll want to make sure your home is adequately prepared. Ensure that outlets are adequately covered with either furniture or outlet covers to keep your pup from chewing on them. Make sure poisonous items such as household cleaners and detergents are out of your pet's reach. Make sure your furniture is secured and your pup cannot access dangerous items such as blind or drapery cords. Also, consider investing in comfortable and safe bedding and toys.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can reach up to a maximum height of 13-18 inches and a weight range of 12-18 pounds, depending on their gender. It is important to consider that they may still continue to grow even after reaching adulthood which can affect their eventual size. On average, Cavaliers typically reach full maturity at 12-15 months of age and the optimal weight range for a fully grown Cavalier is between 14-18 pounds. Although their size tends to remain relatively constant as adults, the weight range can be influenced by factors such as diet and healthcare.
Many Cavalier King Charles Spaniels love swimming, and even if your specific pup doesn't, there are ways to train them and get them comfortable in the water. Many trainers recommend starting slow and gradually introducing them to the water. Start by finding a shallow area with a gradually sloping shore. You can then introduce your pup to the water by guiding them into the shallows. Once they become comfortable in the situation, you could then guide them further in, up to their chests. If they're apprehensive, be sure to give lots of positive reinforcement through verbal reward and treats.
Generally, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known for their friendly and sociable nature, so they usually do get along with other pets. They tend to be eager to please their owners, so they should respond favorably to proper training and guidance. Some basic things to keep in mind include gradually introducing your Cavalier to your other pets, reinforcing good behavior with rewards, and providing them with a safe, secure environment. Creating boundaries, teaching the basics of appropriate social behavior, and providing enough exercise to tire them out can help avoid any potential disputes.
The amount of minutes per day that you should use to train a Cavalier King Charles depends upon your particular goals and objectives. Generally speaking, you should aim to provide around 30 minutes of activity for your Cavalier a day. This activity should be tailored to suit your particular needs and those of the particular pup. However, it is advisable to increase the exercise time as your Cavalier matures and develops. This can be done through more vigorous activities such as agility and playing games of fetch. Also, shorter and more frequent walks should be incorporated in your Cavalier’s daily exercise routine.
