Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are small dogs that were originally bred in England in the 16th and 17th centuries as companions for royalty. They are an active, friendly breed that loves to play and is great for families with children. Generally, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels need some daily exercise, but their needs aren't overly high. This breed is known for their alert, gentle personalities, and they are very sociable and enjoy being around people. They are intelligent, eager to learn, and good-natured; however, they can easily become timid if not properly socialized.
It is generally accepted that Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's do not produce enough dander and saliva to trigger an allergic reaction; thus, they are considered moderately hypoallergenic. However, it is important to point out that the hypoallergenic qualities of Cavalier King Charles dogs can be attributed to their short coats, which require minimal shedding. Other breeds with longer and wirier coats may be more likely to trigger allergies. Additionally, some people may still be allergic to a to a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, depending on individual sensitivities and medical histories.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels should not be fed avocado, grapes, nuts, corn on the cob, anything with a high level of sugar or salt, and certain artificial sweeteners. These can all potentially cause an upset stomach, vomiting, digestion problems, and even more serious health concerns such as pancreatitis or kidney failure. Many human foods, such as onion, garlic, and chocolate are toxic if ingested in large amounts. Bones can also be hazardous, and can cause injury to the dog's mouth, throat, or digestive tract.
Before getting a Cavalier King Charles you should make sure you have all the essentials needed for your canine companion. Some basics to get started would be a food bowl, a water bowl, a collar, leash and harness, a bed, chew toys, grooming supplies, and plenty of treats.
