Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, commonly known as Cavaliers, are a small-breed, toy-sized dog which originated in the 17th century as lap dogs for British aristocrats. They are part of the toy group of dogs categorized by the American Kennel Club but actually form part of the spaniel family. Commonly known for being affectionate and friendly, cavaliers have long ears, big eyes, and a silky, often wavy, coat. As a toy breed, Cavaliers have an average height of 12-13 inches and a weight of 13-18 pounds.
Although there is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic dog, Cavaliers King Charles Spaniels are often known to have low dander levels and tend to produce fewer allergens than most other breeds. This means that Cavaliers are more likely to appeal to allergy sufferers than other breeds, but there are still no guarantees when it comes to allergies. For this reason, if you are an allergy sufferer it is important to give any breed of dog, no matter how hypoallergenic they may claim to be, several interactions before committing to owning one full time.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's should not be fed human food, as it might not have the essential nutrients and minerals they need to remain healthy. Additionally, many human foods contain ingredients that may be harmful to your pup, such as ingredients with high sodium, sugar, and fat content. It’s best to refer to your veterinarian or do your own research to determine what is best for your dog’s individual needs.
Before getting a Cavalier King Charles, you should make sure you have all the essential supplies. Some of these include food and water bowls, a bed and blankets, a crate or small pen, leash and collar, nail clippers, shampoo and brushes, toys, and treats. You will also want to have a health records book that shows all of your pet’s appointment histories, vaccinations, and any other medical notes. Additionally, it is always good to have a first aid kit for any minor healthcare needs your pet might have.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in four standard sizes. Those sizes include Toy (under 12 pounds 9 to 10 inches high); the smaller sized Blenheim (13 to 18 pounds 11 to 12 inches high); the King Charles (14 to 18 pounds 12 to 13 inches high) and the larger Ruby (more than 18 pounds over 13 inches high). Each size is physically similar, but the Ruby is usually longer in the body and limbs and its ears may have more feathering.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are typically considered fairly active dogs. These canines typically do not require extensive exercise, but prefer to stay active and are known for their spiritedness. As such, they require daily walks and a moderate amount of playtime for stimulation. Despite their small size, Cavaliers have the energy of a much larger breed and can participate in more active tasks, such as running on the beach, playing fetch or agility course work. As they're incredibly friendly dogs, they thrive on social interaction and benefit greatly from having other pets or people to interact with.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are excellent choices for families. They are loyal and gentle pets that are known to be good with kids and other pets in the home. They have enough energy to accompany the family on walks or join in on outdoor activities, but they're also content relaxing at home with their humans. In addition, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are intelligent and easy to train with persistent yet patient encouragement, making them a great choice for first-time pet owners.
Training a Cavalier King Charles is best achieved with consistent and regular training sessions. Ideally, a training session should last at least 10 to 15 minutes per day, although some longer sessions may be beneficial for more complex commands or activities. As the breed is highly intelligent, they can pick up commands quickly and initiate activities independently; hence strong behavioural boundaries should be set and adhered to. It is also easily distracted by its own curiosity or outside stimuli, so short bursts of structured activities are most effective to maintain its attention. Additionally, offering rewards for commands and activities completed successfully can be a great motivator.
