Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, also known as Cavvies, are a breed of toy spaniels with an undeniable cuteness. Currently however, they were derived from the larger King Charles spaniels, becoming separate in the 1920s. They are known for their friendly temperaments, beautiful silky fur, and highly energetic personalities. Cavvies are also incredibly popular, gaining a royal seal of approval! King Charles II loved the breed so much that he made laws preventing the dogs from being molested or impeded in any way.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a breed known for having a relatively low shedding coat. However, as with any other breed, these dogs will require regular grooming, brushing and clipping to keep their coats healthy and thick. This will help reduce the amount of hair they may shed, as well as minimize the amount of airborne allergens in your home. Additionally, they are a breed that requires a good amount of daily exercise and regular exercise helps to promote a healthy coat and skin.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels should never be given bones, as they can splinter and damage the dog's intestines. It’s best to avoid giving any type of table scraps to a Cavalier King Charles too, as these may lead to obesity and even pancreatitis. Other items that should also be avoided include onions, garlic, grapes, and raisins. Additionally, chocolate is also off-limits, as it contains theobromine, which can be toxic to dogs, so artificial sweeteners, such as xylitol, should also be avoided.
Before getting a Cavalier King Charles, make sure you have the essentials for his care and wellbeing. This includes a bed or rest area with a comfortable cushion or blanket, a good quality food and water bowl, several chew toys, a leash for walking, a crate or carrier for training and travel, grooming accessories such as a brush and nail clippers, a crate for potty training, and veterinary care such as vaccinations, spaying or neutering, and regular check-ups. It's also important to consider setting aside money for unexpected medical care.
The size of your Cavalier King Charles puppy will depend on its gender, age, and type. Generally, male puppies are larger than females, with a height between 12 to 13 inches at the shoulder and a weight between 13 to 18 pounds. They are one of the smallest of the Toy breeds. As they grow, their size may increase slightly but their overall look and size will remain petite and similar to what you see in adulthood. Keep in mind that certain types, such as the blenheim type, tend to remain smaller than the ruby type.
Cavailer King Charles need regular exercise to stay healthy and avoid developing bad habits. The amount of exercise they require greatly depends on their age, energy levels, and general health. Generally, young puppies should be taken on three to four walks a day, and adult Cavaliers should have at least one walk each day. They should also have time to play outside and engage in interactive activities like fetch. For older Cavaliers, a daily walk may be enough exercise, but it is important to consider their individual energy and health needs during activities.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are often described as gentle, affectionate, and patient, making them well suited for family environments. They're known for being great with kids, as their sweet disposition and natural desire to please their owners often leads to warm relationships with them. As long as the dog is properly socialized, trained, and given plenty of love and attention from a young age, they get along wonderfully with kids and have the patience to handle the energy and enthusiasm that often come with them.
Yes, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are extremely intelligent and highly trainable breed of dog. They are considered one of the brightest of all breeds, and they learn new commands and tricks very quickly. They also possess natural abilities like a superior sense of smell and a knack for herding animals. Cavaliers also excel at tasks such as retrieving, and generally outshine many breeds in agility and obedience trials. Cavaliers are loyal and devoted companions with hearts of gold, and their inquisitive and devoted nature makes them ideal family pets.
