Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are intelligent, compassionate, and easygoing dogs that love to form deep bonds with their owners. These sweet-tempered, companionable dogs have long silky coats featuring a variety of colors. They are classified as toy dogs, with their height, when fully grown, typically ranging from 12 to 13 inches, and their weight usually ranging from 10-18 pounds. Cavaliers need moderate exercise – daily walks are important to keep them healthy.
Allergies are a potential problem for people living with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. While the breed itself is not known to cause allergic reactions, its long coat can collect dust, mold, and dander, all of which are potential triggers for those suffering from allergies. Additionally, the breed does have a fairly high shedding rate, so people with allergies should take this into consideration before owning one of these beautiful dogs. It is important to note, however, that allergies can vary from person to person.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are renown for their love of food. Feeding should be done in accordance with their age, size, and activity level. A diet that includes high-quality proteins such as poultry, fish, and eggs, as well as complex carbohydrates, is recommended. Owners may also supplement the diet with some fruits and vegetables. Healthy chews such as raw bones or cooked marrow bones, along with dental chews such as bully sticks and hooves, are advised.
Before bringing a Cavalier King Charles into your home, it's important to be prepared with the essentials. This includes a high-quality dog food that is formulated for an active breed such as Cavalier King Charles. You'll also need a collar with ID tag, a leash, dog bedding and toys, as well as a grooming brush and shampoo. Additionally, having a reliable first aid kit and carrying a pet health record book will ensure you're always prepared for any medical needs. Lastly, don't forget to buy some treats and lots of love--these are the most essential items of all!
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in three sizes: toy, miniature, and standard. Toy size is the smallest and typically weighs between eight and 12 pounds. The miniature size weighs between 12 and 18 pounds, and the standard size weighs between 18 and 25 pounds. These sizes are established by the American Kennel Club (AKC) and those weight ranges must be met in order for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel to be accepted as a registered breed.
The amount of time you should dedicate to walking your Cavalier King Charles each day depends on their age and activity level. Generally, a half hour to an hour per day is recommended, but if they are young and/or active, you may want to increase this. To ensure your pup is getting the proper exercise they need, you can start with 10-15 minutes of brisk walking followed by 5-10 minutes of short breaks. As they get older, you may need to adjust the amount of time to fit their individual needs.
Generally, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels get along great with other pets. These friendly, loving dogs usually enjoy being around other animals, so long as the companion animal has a laid-back, mellow disposition. Provided ample socialization time, and as long as aggression isn't an issue, a Cavalier King Charles should exhibit few problems living with other pets in the household. Early exposure to cats and other small pets, such as guinea pigs and birds, should help prevent any potential issues, but when supervised and properly exposed, most Cavaliers enjoy the company of other species.
Training a Cavalier King Charles can be easy, depending on the age, disposition, and past experiences of the individual dog. Puppies, for instance, are generally the easiest to work with when teaching basic commands as they are not yet set in their ways. Adult dogs, on the other hand, may require more patience as they may have already developed habits that will need to be broken and replaced with positive reinforcement. Either way, training any breed requires consistency, lots of patience, rewards, and the knowledge to use proper techniques.
