Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels were originally bred in the 16th century in England as a lapdog for King Charles II. They have aristocratic roots and were popular among high society members. Today, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is ranked the 19th most popular breed in the United States. These dogs have a wide variety of interesting characteristics their eyes are large and round, their ears have long feathering, and they possess a distinctive "scissor" bite. Additionally, they have a long, silky coat that comes in different shades of black, tan, and white.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a luxurious, silky coat that is silkier and softer than most other breeds. While this breed can come inRuby, Blenheim, black and tan, and tri-color coats, their fur is on the shorter side, yet they look regal and full. Underneath that magnificent coat is a strong frame and generally a muscled build with a short, square muzzle and a tail that they carry slightly over their back. This classic breed also has long, erect ears and bright, round, dark eyes.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known for their sweet, affectionate personalities, so it's important to keep in mind that what they eat can have an effect on their health. Avoid feeding your dog any processed food with ingredients that are unfamiliar to you. Foods that have a lot of sugar, artificial flavors, and preservatives should be avoided. Additionally, avoid giving your dog anything with onions, garlic, raisins, grapes, or chocolate, as these can all be harmful.
A few essentials to buy before you welcome a Cavalier King Charles into your home are food and water bowls, bedding, a crate, a collar with an ID tag and leash, a brush to help keep your Cavalier King Charles' coat looking healthy and clean, and toys to keep it entertained. It is also beneficial to create a routine for your pet to help it settle in and feel safe. This could include regularly scheduled meal times, walking and playtime, and grooming appointments.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are unique in that they can range from small to large in size. The smallest can be about 12 pounds while the larger dogs can weigh up to 18 pounds. Although they might not necessarily be considered a "big dog", they are certainly more substantial than their smaller counterparts. They also have a sturdy frame and an athletic stature, which can give them an appearance denser than their size would suggest. As a breed, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels tend to require minimal exercise, but are quite playful and energetic when given the chance.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are one of the most active dog breeds and require plenty of exercise to stay healthy and happy. Simply walking them for an hour each day is a good start, but they need more than that in order to get the physical and mental stimulation that keeps them balanced and content. Incorporating long walks and games of fetch or tug-of-war into their routine is a great way to give them the exercise they need.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are excellent family dogs as they are friendly, gentle, and affectionate dogs. They crave attention from adults and children, love to be petted, and generally get along well with other family pets. They are good watchdogs, being loyal and alert to their owners, but not overly aggressive. These dogs are intelligent and easy to train, they possess a high energy level and require daily activity to keep them healthy and happy. Additionally, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels tend to have a low level of shedding which is great for families that have allergy or asthma issue.
Training your Cavalier King Charles is an important step in creating a strong bond with your pup. Start off by having your pup practice commands such as sit, down, and stay and reward them when they do. Make sure to ensure your pup is motivated by positive reinforcement. Use high-value treats or toys when teaching these commands and start off simple. As your pup learns more advanced commands, start transitioning to praise and petting as rewards. Make sure to train in short, frequent sessions so your pup doesn't become overwhelmed.
