Cavalier King Charles is a small, yet robust, breed of spaniel that originated in the United Kingdom. It is best known for its friendly, gentle temperament often described as "merry" and luxurious yet long-haired coat that can range in color from blenheim (chestnut and white) to ruby (all red). In addition to being an excellent friend and companion, the Cavalier King Charles excels in several types of dog shows and is even registered by the American Kennel Club as a toy breed.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known in the pet industry as a breed that does not shed much. They possess a single, fine-textured coat that is more feathery than fluffy. Typically, the breed is groomed just twice a year – a light trim or plucking of the feathering and a bath and may not require a haircut at all. Despite their short fur, Cavalier King Charles have moderate grooming requirements due to their tendency to pick up dirt and other debris in which their non-shedding hair can become matted or tangled.
A Cavalier King Charles should be fed a diet of high-quality dry dog food and/or moist/wet food specifically formulated for their breed. Fresh, lean meats such as chicken, beef, and fish can be given as well, as long as they are cooked thoroughly and boneless. Fruits and vegetables can provide additional nutrition in moderation. It is important to remember that some things, such as onions and garlic, can be toxic to dogs, so it's important to read those labels very carefully and monitor what you give your Cavalier King Charles.
Before bringing home a Cavalier King Charles, it's important to invest in the necessary essentials: A crate, bedding, collars, chew toys, food bowls, food, treats, grooming supplies, and supplements. Additionally, training classes are highly recommended, as Cavaliers are highly intelligent and require early socialization to mature. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in 4 different sizes: Toy size-9-12 inches tall and weighing 7-14 pounds; Miniature size--12-13 inches tall and weighing 14-18 pounds; Small size--13-14 inches tall and weighing 18-22 pounds; and Standard size-Over 14 inches tall and weighing more than 22 pounds. It is important to note that the Toy and Miniature sizes are not recognized by the AKC.
How much exercise your Cavalier King Charles needs is dependent on age, health conditions, and lifestyle. Generally, adult Cavaliers need at least 30 minutes of exercise per day, while puppies and elderly Cavaliers need at least 20 minutes. Walking is a great way to provide the exercise they need, as it increases their physical activity, helps release energy, and can help reduce stress. To ensure that your Cavalier King Charles is getting the exercise it needs, aim for a minimum of 30 minutes of walking per day.
