Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an aristocratic breed, with a sensitive nature and free-spirited personality. One of the most endearing facts about this breed is that they are believed to have a direct lineage to the King Charles Spaniel, a breed owned by multiple kings of England. An interesting characteristic of this breed is its domed head shape, as well as its large, round eyes. From larrikin to lap pup, they make excellent companion animals. They love long walks, car rides, adventure, and cuddles, and rely on their families for loyalty and love.
The Cavalier King Charles is a breed of dog known for its long, silky coat. The hair is generally long and wavy, often hanging just past the ankles, although the length can vary from one the dog to the next. The coloring is usually a deep and rich chestnut and red, although some white markings on the chest and paws are common. The ears and muzzle are covered in longer feathering, and sometimes long feathering will appear on the back and neck of the breed as well. The coat is very easy to maintain with regular brushing and occasional bathing.
A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel needs a diet that is high in protein and fat, and contains essential fatty acids. The diet should include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as high-quality, grain-free kibble. In addition to a balanced diet of top-notch food, your Cavalier King Charles should also receive chew bones, rawhide, or other similar treats to help promote dental (and overall) health. It's best to avoid treats that are filled with artificial flavors and additives, like chocolates and human snacks.
To best prepare your home for a new Cavalier King Charles, it's important to ensure that the space is safe and secure. Start by assessing the home and removing any possible hazards such as cords, plants, or other items that may be hazardous to your pet. Once the living space is safe, equip yourself with the proper food and supplies. Make sure to have enough food, bowls, a bed, a collar, and a leash on hand. Introduce your new pet to its surroundings slowly. Allow the dog to enter the home with minimal introduction of family and friends.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are one of the smaller members of the spaniel family, but they are still considered a medium-sized breed. On average, males typically reach around 12-13 inches in height and weigh up to 18 pounds. Female Cavaliers tend to weigh around 13-18 pounds and reach a height of 11-12 inches. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have an impressive lifespan of 12-14 years, and during the prime of their life they can grow to be larger than originally anticipated.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels need daily moderate exercise to stay both mentally and physically healthy. An hour of exercise in a day is enough for the breed, as they don't require a huge amount of energy to burn. A few short walks throughout the day will keep them happy and help maintain a healthy weight. This can include a longer walk at any given time, and interacting with the dog through fun activities or games. Other activities such as fetch and flyball can keep your dog engaged and provide an effective way to burn excess energy.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are generally considered to be an excellent breed to share a home with children. They are gentle and affectionate, have lots of energy, and love to be included in family activities. Being small in size, they are also very cooperative with children's love of chasing and snuggling. They thrive in attention from their owners, including children, and are incredibly patient and loyal. Cavaliers are friendly and—in the majority of cases—very outgoing with kids. That being said, they still are sensitive and should never be intentionally hurt or frightened.
The amount of exercise necessary for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is dependent on the age, energy level, and health of the dog. Generally speaking, the recommended amount of exercise for an adult Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is 45 minutes per day. This could include a few brisk walks, running in a fenced off area, or playing games like fetch. It is important that the exercise is fun and includes variety. Furthermore, make sure that the sessions are no longer than 45 minutes to prevent overexertion.
