Questions & Answers
The Cavalier King Charles is a small breed of spaniel, known and recognized by the Kennel Club of England in 1945 as a toy breed. They are particularly good with children and make for wonderful family pets, as they are typically content to lie on a lap for long periods. Characterized by their long-haired silky coats, outgoing personalities and friendly faces, they come in four different color variations: Blenheim (chestnut-red and white), black and tan, tri-color (black, white and tan); and ruby (all-over red).
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs possess a combination of traits that may make it more hypoallergenic than other breeds. They have a silky, wavy coat made of single layers that repel dirt, dander, and shed minimally in comparison to other breeds. Additionally, they do not carry the protective outer coat of more traditional longer-haired breeds, eliminating even further, lost hair from heavy shedding. The fur-producing oil glands in Cavaliers' skin are generally less active, allowing for less oil deposits, which is important in reducing shedding and producing less dander.
When determining what food is best for your Cavalier King Charles, you'll want to consider the breed's nutritional needs. Cavaliers are active dogs and need a food with protein, good fats, carbohydrates, and a balance of essential vitamins and minerals. A food specifically formulated for small breed dogs with a moderate activity level that is age-appropriate is ideal. Consider a food specifically formulated for Cavaliers, as they tend to have unique nutritional needs. Be sure to appropriately adjust the feedings based on the age, size, and activity level of your pup.
Purchasing essential items before bringing home a Cavalier King Charles is highly recommended. You'll need a collar and a leash for walks, a comfy bed with blankets for snoozing, grooming supplies, food and water dishes, and of course, food that is formulated for your new pup's age and size. You'll also want toys, a few chew sticks and maybe even a synthetic bone. Lastly, grab some trainings treats to help with teaching proper behavior.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in four distinct sizes. The smallest size is the Tea Cup, weighing only up to 4 pounds. The Toy size of Cavalier King Charles Spaniel measures up to 12 pounds. The next size up is the miniature size, which can get up to 18 pounds in weight. The largest size is the standard, which can measure over 18 pounds. Each size can come in a variety of colors, from black and tan to ruby and white.
Certainly if your Cavalier King Charles is fit and healthy enough for you both to do so, taking your dog running can be a great way to stay active and have fun together. However, it is important to remember to keep your pup’s age, breed, and exercise levels in mind. Some breeds simply require less exercise than others, and the intensity of the exercise should increase gradually. Before taking your Cavalier out on a run, make sure you are familiar with their breed-specific needs in terms of exercise and nutrition.
Generally speaking, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs are incredibly friendly, loving, and patient, so they typically do get along very well with children. As with any pet, it's important to teach kids how to properly interact with the dog. This includes giving it respect and exercising patience, as the pet needs time to adjust and get used to its new living environment. Early socialization is also key. If the pet is introduced to various people and situations in its younger years, such as children, then it is more likely to feel comfortable around them.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered to be a very intelligent breed of dog that can be easily trained with patience and consistency. They have a good temperament and are eager to please their owners. In addition, they can pick up new tricks quickly, and they also do well with children. That said, they may not be the most independent of breeds; they may need extra help or guidance to carry out tasks. Still, their eagerness to listen and loyalty to their owners make up for it, and they can be a great faithful companion.
