Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a history that dates back to the 17th century. They are named after King Charles II who had an affinity for these small but lovable dogs. They are known as outgoing, friendly breeds who enjoy human companionship. A fun fact about Cavalier King Charles Spaniels is that they are a part of the toy group of dogs, making them a great choice for people who live in smaller spaces. They are particularly good companions for older individuals due to their quiet and gentle nature. In addition, they are known to be quite tolerant of other pets, especially cats.
The Cavalier King Charles coat is a beautiful blend of silky, soft, and luxurious texture. Its medium-length coat is short on the face and long, flowing on the back and chest. The cost typically has a deep, chestnut color along with white and black patches and a white-tipped feather plume tail. Not only does it look simply stunning, but the Cavalier King Charles coat is also hypoallergenic, meaning it won't aggravate allergies or cause extra shedding, making it a great choice for those who suffer from pet allergies.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are typically omnivores, so they typically eat a balanced diet of both wet and dry dog food, as well as occasional treats like fruit or vegetables. They have a tendency to be picky eaters, so it's important to ensure that their diet is nutritious, varied, and free of fillers and unhealthy additives. It's also essential to provide plenty of fresh, clean water and to make sure the food is served in an appropriate amount and at the right temperature. Additionally, as with all dogs, it's important to watch portion sizes to avoid obesity.
Prior to bringing your new Cavalier King Charles home, it is important to prepare your house for your new pet. Create a safe and comfortable space for them by pet-proofing the home. Block off access to potential hazards like electrical cords, stairs, and furniture. Get them familiar with every room in the home and establish boundaries for areas they are allowed to access. Provide appropriate toys, bedding, and furniture and take the time to get to know your new pet’s individual needs.
Cavalier King Charles puppies can vary in size according to the breed's parent dogs and the puppy's gender. Generally, the breed usually grows to be somewhere between 12 to 13 inches in height at the withers and between 13 to 18 pounds in weight when they reach maturity. However, it's important to note that each individual puppy will grow at its own rate and so the size your particular pup achieves is impossible to guess at this stage.
Although Cavaliers were bred to accompany human companions on walks and outdoor adventures, many of them enjoy the pleasure of swimming as well. Some Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have been known to take the plunge into the pool or lake on their own! Many enjoy splashing around and some even go as far as fetching a ball until they are dog-tired. Owners can encourage this behavior by bringing the pup to the beach or lake for an enjoyable and refreshing swim. Providing floatation devices can also help, especially for those Cavalier's not so inclined to take the plunge themselves.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels typically get along fairly well with other pets in the house, such as cats and other dogs. Of course, each dog is an individual and some may be less tolerant of other pets than others. If introducing a Cavalier King Charles to other animals, it is best to do so slowly and in a supervised environment. Expose them to each other bit by bit to avoid overwhelming either the Cavalier or the pet they are being introduced to. In general, when socialized properly, there should not be any major problems when introducing a Cavalier King Charles to other pets.
Training a Cavalier King Charles can be relatively easy depending on its individual temperament and energy level, as well as the amount of time and effort its owner is willing to put into the process. Like all breeds, the Cavalier King Charles does best with consistency, patience, praise, and reward-based training. Obedience training is a great way to get started, but it is important to supplement it with how-to guides and expert advice to ensure that it is being done correctly.
