Questions & Answers
A Cavalier King Charles is a type of Toy spaniel that is renowned for its affectionate, gentle, and loyal temperament. Named after King Charles II, the Cavalier King Charles typically stands up to 12-13 inches tall and can weigh anywhere from 13-18 pounds. These energetic, intelligent dogs also have a beautiful, silky, and medium-length coat that typically comes in four colors: black and tan, ruby, tricolor, and blenheim.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel coat is medium-long and silky, with a slight wave. Generally it comes in colors of ruby (dark red), black and tan, or black and tan with white markings. The coat is warm and fluffy and can come in any shade from solid black to solid white. The unique aspect of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is that it needs no trimming or grooming to maintain its distinctive look. The coat only needs a regular brushing and to be kept clean with occasional baths.
Cavalier King Charles should not be fed food that contains xylitol, a sweetener that is toxic to dogs, as well as uncooked eggs, onions, garlic, avocados, grapes and raisins, and sodas. In addition, any type of food that is high in fat should also be avoided; this includes fatty meats, butter, and cheese. Artificial colored or flavored treats should also not be given, as they can lead to stomach problems and can result in food sensitivities.
To prepare for your new Cavalier King Charles, there are many measures you should take to ensure your pet's health and well-being. First, it's important to find a reputable veterinarian, as well as consider any pet insurance so that you're well prepared if any health issues arise. Secondly, it's a good idea to get basic pet-safe grooming products such as brushes, toothbrushes, and shampoos. Also, create a safe and comfortable environment for your pup by purchasing items such as a bed, food and water bowls, toys, and crating materials.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels typically reach a height of 12 to 13 inches from the shoulder and a weight of 13 to 18 pounds, making them a relatively small breed compared to other spaniels. It is important to note that some can reach up to 22 pounds, the "standard" weight listed being on the lower end of the size range. If fed an excess of food and minimal exercise, the breed is at risk of becoming overweight and may appear to be larger than standard. The breed generally lives a long and healthy life, which can be up to 14 years.
Many Cavalier King Charles Spaniel owners report that their pets take great joy in swimming! These loving, intelligent dogs often become enthusiastic about playing in the water. The breed's silky coat and sturdy build make them excellent swimmers. To help ensure the safety of your pet while they enjoy their pool time, you should provide a safe, supervised environment, get them a canine life vest, and make sure to avoid overcrowding. With these measures, your dog should have plenty of fun splashing around in the water.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are well known for their placid temperaments, so they make great companions for children. Cavaliers are gentle, easygoing dogs that adjust to any environment. They are patient and friendly by nature, and as a result, they get along with almost everyone they come into contact with, including children. They are a good choice for families and enjoy attention from kids. In addition to their gentle attitude towards children, Cavaliers are smart and devoted, and they truly love being around people– especially their human families.
Training your Cavalier King Charles can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. It is important to use positive reinforcement when teaching the pup commands and behaviors. Always start with short sessions and use lots of praise and treats for good behavior. A trick like teaching your pup to sit is easy to accomplish even at a young age. Establish a reward-based system for your pup and start by showing them what behavior you would like. This will apply to more complex commands such as fetch as well. It is also important to make sure you are consistent with your rules and expectations for your Cavalier King Charles.
