Questions & Answers
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small, lovable, and playful breed of dog. They are arguably one of the most affectionate breed of dogs around, and a loyal companion. Historically, these dogs were bred to to be companion animals for royalty, however, today they make wonderful house pets. Physically, Cavaliers typically weigh between 13-18 pounds, and are typically 12-13 inches tall. They boast a silky, soft fur, with a long graceful muzzle and expressive, almond-shaped eyes.
The Cavalier King Charles dog has a beautiful coat! It is long, straight and silky with shorter feathering on the ears, legs, feet and tail. The color of the coat is often just described as "blenheim" which is a combination of red and white that looks like an abstract painting and is simply stunning! The "ruby" coat is a rich chestnut red and the "tricolor" coat is mostly black and white with tans and browns mixed throughout.
Cavalier King Charles usually enjoy a nutritionally balanced diet that consists of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins. They often enjoy kibble specifically tailored for small breeds. It is important to make sure that the kibble contains the right amounts of the necessary nutrients in order to keep your Cavalier King Charles healthy. In addition to kibble, canned and wet food is an excellent option to give them extra hydration. Treats can also be offered, though they should not make up a significant portion of their overall diet.
Before welcoming your Cavalier King Charles into your home, it is important to take some steps to make sure your pup has a happy and comfortable transition. Begin by establishing a routine for feedings, potty breaks and walks. Next, start a basic obedience program to teach commands such as sit, stay, come and leave it. Make sure your home is puppy-proofed so your new addition does not get into any trouble. You also should consider purchasing appropriate chew toys, providing a safe and comfortable bed, setting up a grooming routine and making sure your vet records are up-to-date.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in a variety of sizes, with four classifications to consider. The Toy variety can range from 12 to 13 inches in height; the Miniature variety is between 12 to 13 inches in height and weighs between 13 to 18 pounds; the Small variety is from 13 to 15 inches in height and weighs between 18 to 25 pounds; and the Standard variety can reach 15 to 18 inches in height and weigh 25 to 38 pounds. Ultimately, each individual Cavalier King Charles Spaniel will differ in size depending on their gender and bloodline.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels need a moderate amount of exercise to stay healthy and fit. Generally speaking, they should partake in around 30 minutes of relatively intense exercise per day to remain healthy and strong. This exercise should include a good combination of walk and playtime. Regular walks to familiar and new places can help keep them mentally stimulated and healthy. During playtime, Cavaliers typically enjoy games such as fetch, tug of war, and interactive toys. Also, Cavaliers love to swim, so if you your pet pool access, that is a great way to provide them with additional exercise.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can be great family companions, especially with kids. With their sweet and gentle personalities, they often form close bonds with children and can be trusted to be not only loyal but patient too. Since Cavaliers are an intelligent breed, they learn quickly from their owners and may pick up on cues from children even quicker than adults. As long as proper etiquette is taught and children are taught to be respectful of the dog, a Cavalier can be a loving addition to the family and get along great with kids.
Training a Cavalier King Charles is something that can definitely be accomplished with patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. This breed is smart and eager to please, so in the right environment and with the right techniques it's achievable. Every dog is different and will respond to different methods, so it's important to take the time to understand what's right for your particular pet. The key to successful training is establishing a routine and providing plenty of love and rewards when goals are achieved.
