Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a unique and special breed of toy spaniels that originated in the United Kingdom in the 1600s. They are classified as a toy breed and belong to the spaniel group within the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) and are the smallest of the toy breeds. They are known for their loyal and affectionate personalities, as well as their high energy levels and love for getting attention.
The Cavalier King Charles is an elegant breed with a silky and luxurious coat. They have a medium-long, straight coat, coming in a variety of colors including: tri-colored, black and tan, ruby, and blenheim. Their coat is actually made up of two layers, the top-coat and the under-coat. The top-coat is harsh enough to repel dirt and water, while the under-coat is soft and fluffy. Cavalier King Charles' coats require regular brushing at least 2 times a week in order to prevent mats from forming.
Feeding your Cavalier King Charles is an important part of ensuring his health and wellness. Generally, he should consume a high quality, nutritionally-balanced dog food that reflects his breed, life stage, and activity level. Puppies will need a specially formulated food for their growing needs, while adults may benefit from a formula with a higher protein content. Your vet can provide guidance to help you find the right type of food for your pup.
Preparing for your new Cavalier King Charles is an exciting experience! Start by gathering all the necessary supplies and materials, such as a carrier, bed, food and water dishes, collar and leash, chew toys, and a brush. Additionally, you'll want to consider enrolling your pup in obedience classes to further their training, as well as providing them with regular dental and physical health exams. When introducing your Cavalier King Charles to their new home for the first time, create a space that's familiar and safe, free from loud noises and other potential stressors.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs are small to medium-sized dogs, weighing in at between 13 to 18 pounds and being 12 to 13 inches tall at the shoulder. These dogs retain the energetic spirit of a much larger breed, despite their smaller size. Despite their small stature, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs are quite sturdy and can be surprisingly sturdy for their size. Unlike other toy breeds, Cavaliers are not known for being yappy, and have a calm, docile demeanor, which can make them great house pets. They are also very devoted and loving companions.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a long history of being great swimmers. While not all of them love to get in the water, many of the breed enjoy swimming and make excellent swimmers. They generally learn to swim from a young age, and those that don't take to it naturally can be taught with a little bit of patience and training. Some Cavaliers even excel at dock diving and agility games that involve water. Additionally, swimming provides great exercise for Cavaliers and can help keep their coats in healthy shape. Whether or not a Cavalier loves to swim will vary from dog to dog.
Absolutely! The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a great breed for first-time owners. They are an affectionate and loving breed and rarely bark. They are sensitive, companionable and playful and generally enjoy being with people. This gentle, lively breed is easily trained and usually content to stay indoors. They require only moderate exercise, so they are a perfect pet for those with limited time. Despite their small size, they require some maintenance and need regular grooming, daily brushing and occasional trims. All these things make the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel an excellent pet for first-time owners!
Training your Cavalier King Charles is a great way to provide mental stimulation for your pup while deepening the bond you share. To start, make sure you and your dog are in a positive space. Give rewards in the form of treats or praise for desired behaviors; avoid shouting or punishing your dog if they are not understanding your commands. If you're new to dog training, it can help to consult a professional local trainer or find a training class. Through repetition, consistency and patience, your Cavalier King Charles can learn obedience commands such as sit, stay and come.
