Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles are classified as toy spaniels, and are known for their sweet temperament, silky coat, friendly nature and large eyes. They are among the oldest of all toy breeds and were originally developed in England as a lapdog for royalty, beginning with King Charles I. They weigh an average of 13-18 pounds, and come in four colors (tricolor, blenheim, ruby and black and tan). Cavaliers are active dogs, but they don't need tons of exercise, only regular walks and playtime.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered to be minimal shedders, but some may have a denser coat which will shed more than other types of Cavaliers. These dogs experience seasonal shedding and typically require regular grooming on a bi-weekly basis. The quality of their coat is greatly determined by diet and overall health, so making sure your Cavalier is getting the best nutrition and exercise possible is a great way to keep their shedding to a minimal amount.
A Cavalier King Charles should not be fed anything that poses a choking hazard, such as hard treats, bones or pieces of fabric, as their necks are quite long and thin. It is not recommended to give them high-fat diets as they are prone to weight gain, so instead provide a balanced diet with low fat content, low sugar levels and food specifically formulated for Small Breed dogs. Additionally, it is important to pay attention to the calcium level in the food you feed them, to avoid joint and hip problems.
Preparing your home for a new Cavalier King Charles can be a fun and exciting process! Ensure your home is well-stocked with high-quality food, a cozy bed, and plenty of toys. Just as importantly, ensure your home is pet friendly by removing items that are hazardous to pets, such as small items, plastic bags, cleaning chemicals, medications, and so on that could pose a choking hazard. If your new pup has an existing health problem, take extra precautionary steps to ensure their safety and comfort.
Cavaliers King Charles usually reach a height of 12 to 13 inches and weigh anywhere between 13 and 18 pounds. This makes them a medium-sized breed, perfect for many households. On the whole, they tend to be quite mild-mannered and do well in most any environment. As far as their appearance, they have a silky double coat with an eminently graceful look that echoes nobility. Their moderate energy level also makes them an ideal companion for those who lead an active lifestyle, as well as people who live in apartments or other compact dwellings.

Additionally, they have a medium-long coat with an undercoat suitable for swimming, making it easier for a Cavalier King Charles to stay warm while paddling around. Most Cavalier King Charles will happily take a dip in a pool, a lake, or a pond just be sure to use caution around water and, if possible, keep a life jacket!
According to most sources, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are generally very friendly and loving with children and typically make excellent family companions. They are known to be one of the more sociable breeds, getting along with both children and other pets quite well. These dogs love attention, and they are often used in families with children as an aid to teach positive behaviors, such as showing affection and gentleness. The key to successful relationships between the dogs and children is to ensure that the children are taught from a young age to respect animals and handle them carefully.
The amount of training that you need to give your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel typically depends on various factors such as how well trained it already is, as well as the individual temperament and energy level of your dog. Generally, a minimum of 15 minutes of training each day is needed to ensure adequate reinforcement of the desired behavior. It is recommended to dedicate slightly more time to training your Cavalier, rounding out the recommended amount to at least 30 minutes per day, depending on your individual pup.
