Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are small toy breeds of the Spaniel family. They are known for their tranquil nature and loving dispositions. These family-oriented dogs are eager to please, easy to train, and companionable. They usually weigh between 13 to 18 pounds, and have a silky, medium-length, wavy coat in a variety of colors. Their large, round eyes are said to be the source of their “melting expression”, and their tail is not docked.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not known to cause allergies in humans, as they are hypoallergenic; however, it's important to note that no breed is 100% hypoallergenic. While the dander, saliva, and fur of this breed may cause less of a reaction than other breeds, some people may still suffer allergic reactions due to their specific sensitivity to allergies.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs should not be fed any foods that contain a lot of fat, such as sausages, bacon, or processed meats. Furthermore, they should not eat any type of chocolate, as this is highly toxic for all breeds of dogs. Additionally, foods that are unsafe for humans, such as onions, avocados, and grapes, should also be avoided. These foods can cause gastrointestinal problems and other health problems.
Before getting a Cavalier King Charles, it is essential to purchase items such as a sturdy dog crate, a comfortable bed, appropriate food and water dishes, several chew toys, a leash, a good quality dog shampoo, and a brush specifically designed for Cavalier King Charles' coat. Additionally, a pet seat belt, an identification tag, and a training book or video are also indispensable. It is also beneficial to purchase a heartworm prevention medication and schedule regular vet visits.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are generally considered small to medium-sized dogs. They typically stand 12-13 inches and weigh 13-18 pounds for males, and 11-12 inches and weigh 10-15 pounds for females. While they may be small in stature, they are full of personality and make wonderful companions. In terms of size, they fit comfortably in the category of small-medium sized dogs, but regardless of size they make fantastic additions to any family, bringing joy, comedy, and plenty of warmth.
A Cavalier King Charles should aim to get between 30 to 60 minutes of walking per day. Depending on age, fitness level, and environment, the exact number of minutes should be tailored to the individual Cavalier King Charles. It is important to keep in mind that hard surfaces may be harmful to your Cavalier King Charles's feet, so try to stick to paths of grass, soil, sand, and bark when possible. When walking your Cavalier King Charles, make sure to bring plenty of breaks and water to hydrate the pup.
Cavaliers King Charles are known for their loving, loyal, and gentle nature, making them an ideal choice for families with children. Their patient, non-aggressive nature ensures they won't be too energetic and overly-boisterous for your kids, while their intelligence ensures they will recognize and respond to commands and training quickly and easily. They are known for their sociable, friendly nature meaning they will happily welcome anyone into their home, while also making an effort to maintain their own schedule when they can.
Training a Cavalier King Charles should begin early in their puppy years. Start with the basics such as toileting, house-training, good behavior, and obedience. Develop a relationship with your Cavalier King Charles through positive reinforcement, treats, and lots of playtime. Familiarize your cav with commands such as sit, lay, heel, and fetch. Establish yourself as the leader by using calm, firm and consistent cues and routines, rewarding positive behavior. Socialization through meeting new people and animals, exposing them to various sounds and sights, and visiting different environments can also be extremely helpful.
