Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have been popular for centuries, since appearing in paintings from the 16th century. They were named after King Charles II of England, who was known for his love of the breed. The breed was highly popular with members of the royal court and is still popular today. Fun facts about the breed include that they are an exceedingly sociable breed of the toy spaniel type and as such enjoy both the company of people and other dogs. They are also renowned for being very cuddly and affectionate and make excellent lap dogs.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a stunningly beautiful coat that comes in a wide variety of colors, ranging from rich ruby to deep black and tan. Their fur is full and silky, with longer feathering on their ears, legs, and chest. Unique to this dog breed, they also have a longer curled tail and their coats tend to be more profuse than other breeds.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a hearty appetite and it’s important to provide them with a balanced and nutrient-rich diet to support optimal health. They typically fare best on a diet of kibble, dried dog food or wet canned food. Owners may also supplement their dog's diet with small amounts of human foods like cooked chicken, vegetables, and eggs. It’s important to note that some human foods are not suitable for dogs, so it’s best to research before giving them any kind of table scraps.
Prior to welcoming your new Cavalier King Charles into your home, it is important to ensure that your environment is properly and safely prepared. Be sure to do thorough research on the breed so that you can provide anything your puppy may need, from appropriate toys to food and supplies. You should also be prepared to dedicate a specific area of your home solely for the pup, complete with bedding, an appropriately sized crate, and other items to ensure it is comfortable and content. Additionally, take time to ‘puppy proof’ your house to minimize the chance of safety hazards.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in four size categories toy, miniature, dwarf, and standard. Toy Cavaliers, the smallest size, measure under 25 cm (10 inches) at the withers when fully grown, while the standard size can reach up to 36 cm (14 inches) or more. Miniature Cavaliers measure between 25-30 cm (10-12 inches) at the withers, and dwarf Cavaliers measure between 30-35 cm (12-14 inches).
Taking your Cavalier King Charles running is generally not recommended unless they have been specifically bred for running or agility. Depending on the breed, size, and age of the dog, running could cause stress on their joints due to their small size and thin legs. For these reasons, it's better to take your Cavalier King Charles for a walk or shorter, slower run to maintain their health and wellbeing. Keeping the run short can also make sure that the dog doesn't become too confused or tired while out and about. Giving your Cavalier King Charles plenty of breaks while running is necessary.
Generally speaking, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels do very well with children and make wonderful family pets. They are caring and loving dogs that can form strong bonds with children, and the eternal affection of a Cavalier pet may even help kids develop empathy and a sense of responsibility. They enjoy activity and require daily walks with their families. Given their gentle nature, patience, and easily trainable nature, they have a tendency to be a good fit with children. However, it is important to be mindful that supervision is key when the pooch is in contact with children to avoid potential accidents or injuries.
Absolutely! Cavalier King Charles are intelligent dogs that are eager to learn. They can be trained to do a variety of tasks, from obedience to agility. They understand their owners very quickly, so it's important to reward them when they do something correctly and to be consistent in disciplining them. Plus, Cavaliers' playful nature means they love to learn new tricks and will actively seek out ways to impress you. All that said, it's wise to give Cavaliers plenty of brain stimulation with regular training, exercise, and playtime.
