Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known for their long, silky coats and signature, soulful eyes. They descended from the Toy Spaniels that were popular during the reign of King Charles II of England, and have closely kept ties to their royal lineage. They are small and friendly by nature, loving to play and always ready for cuddle time.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have extremely low levels of shedding, which make them one of the ideal breeds for those that need a hypoallergenic pet. They possess floor length fur that does not generally shed. However, they do need to be brushed regularly to keep up their coat’s shape and to prevent mats from forming. Plus, for an added bonus, their silky long coat will bring a lot of cuddles with it.
Feeding your Cavalier King Charles requires you to provide a diet made up of high-quality, commercially-prepared dry food. Be sure to double check the ingredients and avoid preservatives, colors, and fillers that can cause digestive or health issues. Make sure your pup is getting the appropriate portion size for his specific caloric needs. Some pet owners will choose to supplement the dry kibble with canned or frozen foods, fresh vegetables, and fruits and add vitamins and minerals to his diet. Above all, ensure your pup is getting the nutrition they need to enjoy optimal health for years to come.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Cavalier King Charles involves gaining a full understanding of the breed and its needs. It is important to research and study the characteristics of the breed to understand its temperament, physical requirements and make sure to socialize it early on. Proper nutrition and health maintenance are also essential to help your pooch reach its full potential. Exercise and allowing playtime will keep your pup happy, as well as regular grooming and periodic vet visits. Additionally, make sure to be consistent with training and provide a safe, loving and stimulating home environment.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCS) come in two sizes: Toy and Standard. Generally, the Toy size of the breed is considered to be a small dog, and the Standard size, the larger of the two, is considered to be a medium-sized pooch. Therefore, while not officially classified as a 'big dog', Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can still reach larger sizes due to the Standard size being available. Furthermore, while Cavaliers are not bred to be guard dogs or large watch dogs, they do seem to have an impressive presence regardless of their smaller size.
Absolutely! Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have plenty of energy and love to get out and be active. They are small but strong, and love to go for long walks, runs, swims, and playtime. They are good companions on hikes and outdoor adventures, and they enjoy activities like agility and flyball. Their owners often report that their Cavaliers are always ready for a romp in the park or a game of fetch in the backyard, too.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can make excellent pets for first-time owners. They are generally gentle and affectionate, making them easily trainable, and they are small, so they can easily fit into most living spaces. They also don't require a ton of exercise, so they can make a great pet for those with a more relaxed lifestyle. In addition, they often form strong bonds with their owners and provide companionship, so they can make a great companion animal.
Training a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel requires patience, consistency, and a firm but gentle hand. First, decide which types of commands you would like to train your Cavalier to follow and make sure you establish a positive rewards system for complying with them. Then, start with basic commands such as "sit" and "come" and break them down into small, manageable tasks that your dog can practice. Once your Cavalier has mastered the basics, you can then move onto higher level commands such as "lie down", "heel", and "stay".
