Questions & Answers
The Cavalier King Charles is a type of Toy Spaniel that is characterized by its large, lovely dark eyes, its silky long ears, and its plumy tail. It is an intelligent, energetic, and loyal companion, descended from a breed of small hunting spaniels that were favored by King Charles II of England in the 17th century. Historically, this breed was favored by noble families and profusely pampered by them. Today, the Cavalier King Charles is known for its gentle and affectionate disposition combined with its eagerness to please its owners.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a long, silky coat that needs to be brushed daily with a pin brush to maintain its health. The breed’s full coat on the head and ears is well-feathered, while the body has a flat or slightly wavy coat that is slightly longer on the chest, rear, and feathering on the legs. The most common colors are Blenheim (a chestnut red and white combination), Tricolor (black, white, and tan), and Ruby (a solid red-brown).
Cavalier King Charles are a breed of small, lovable spaniels and have a voracious appetite! They usually get most of their nutrition from a high-quality dry dog food formulated for small-breed dogs, but they also enjoy a variety of other foods including certain fruits, vegetables, and meat. It's important that they receive food that's appropriate for their size and activity level, so check with your vet for specific advice. They also require regular access to clean, fresh water and should not be overfed!
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a few special needs that must be taken into consideration. They are a fairly active breed and require regular exercise and daily walks. Good nutrition is very important as their metabolism is somewhat delicate and they can easily gain weight. It is advisable to brush their coat at least once a week to keep it healthy and avoid matting. They are also prone to some genetic health issues which can be minimized by having regular vet visits and by avoiding over-breeding.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in two sizes: Toy Cavaliers, which typically weigh between 8 and 14 pounds as adults, and Blenheim Cavaliers which typically weigh between 13 and 18 pounds as adults. Both breeds stand between 11 and 13 inches in height at the shoulder. However, within each breed there can be a slight difference in sizes, but they are both typically categorized as small dogs. Additionally, some breeders will produce mixed breeds of the two types; these dogs are often referred to as ‘Mixies.’ Mixies may have traits from both parents, including size.
While it is generally not recommended to take your Cavalier King Charles running, depending on the age and health of your specific Cavalier, the answer is not an absolute 'no'. It is best to take your pup to the vet for a check-up to ensure their joints are healthy and strong. If your pup gets an all-clear from the vet, then slow and controlled activities such as jogging or walking can be done to keep up your Cavalier's health. To set your pup up for success, start at a slow pace and build up the speed and time gradually.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a wonderful addition to any family. They make excellent pets because of their outgoing and friendly personalities, and they absolutely love being around people. They are affectionate, gentle, and loyal to their owners, and they are great with children, making them the ideal companion for families. They also require minimal exercise, so you don't need to spend a lot of time outside with them. With their manageable size and lifespan of around fourteen years, you can enjoy a lifetime of joy with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as a faithful companion.
Training a Cavalier King Charles can be a rewarding experience, however, it is important to remember that each breed of dog is unique and may have different amounts of difficulty when it comes to training. Although it is generally accepted that the Cavalier is a mild-mannered, easygoing breed that generally learns quickly, it may also require patience and consistency from its trainer; depending on the individual temperament of the dog, some may require extra work to learn effectively. Additionally, Cavalier King Charles may require special training due to their strong social, friendly, and outgoing personalities.
