Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a Royal past! Known as the "Comforter of Kings," they were the favored pet of King Charles I and his son King Charles II in the 17th century. The breed comes in four distinct colors: Blenheim, Tri-Color, Ruby, and Black & Tan. Cavaliers have an average lifespan of 10-12 years and they are great with children which makes them the perfect family companions. While they enjoy a good cuddle, Cavaliers also love to run, swim, and play! These active dogs crave both physical and mental stimulation.
Generally speaking, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a non-shedding breed of dog. This is due to their being a part of the Toy Group, which results in them having a smooth, silky coat that doesn't shed like many other breeds. Despite this, the breed can produce a fair amount of dander, which is common among all breeds, and would lead to occasional shedding. But, due to their smooth, silky coat, this is minimal and easy to handle.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are an inherently active breed, so they require a balanced diet of quality small-breed dog food that is rich in calories and proteins to provide them with energy and plenty of nutrients. They can also benefit from supplemental feedings of homemade cooked carrots, boiled eggs, boiled chicken, steamed vegetables, and brown rice. Fruits and vegetables that are safe for canine consumption include apples, blueberries, strawberries, sweet potatoes, and carrots. Additionally, plain yogurt, cottage cheese, and fish such as salmon are good sources of protein.
Before you bring your new Cavalier King Charles home, take some time to make sure your home is prepared. First, get all the necessary supplies like food, treats, toys, and bedding. Make sure there are no toxic plants in your garden that your pup can get into, and provide pet-friendly cleaning supplies in case of accidents. If you have other pets, ensure they are up to date on their vaccinations.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, commonly referred to as Cavalier Kings, can reach an average weight of anywhere between 13 and 18 pounds and a height of 12 to 13 inches. However, this can vary depending on whether the dog is male or female, as males tend to be larger than their female counterparts. While they will not get as big as larger breeds such as the Golden Retriever or Newfoundland, their size can still surprise many first-time pet owners. With their long, silky coats of fur, they can give off the impression of being bigger than they actually are.
The amount of daily exercise and walking your Cavalier King Charles requires will depend on the age and current physical condition of your dog. A good rule of thumb is that your pet should get at least 20-30 minutes of physical activity each day, divided into 2-3 short but vigorous walks. Walks should be at moderate pace, and the distance depends on your dog's endurance but does not need to be more than a mile or two.
Cavalier King Charles can make wonderful pets for first-time owners. They are often very friendly, smart, and loyal dogs that make great companions. Cavaliers are very adaptable and can adjust to a variety of environments, making them a good fit for someone who may not be as experienced with dog ownership. They don't require a lot of grooming and are a relatively easy breed to take care of. Cavaliers are also good with children and can adjust to a variety of living situations. Whether it be an apartment or a house, Cavaliers can make great additions to a first-time pet owner's family.
An ideal training routine for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel would include approximately 30 minutes of exercise per day, split into two or three sessions. The amount of time may vary depending on your individual pup's energy level and needs, but 30 minutes is a great rule of thumb to start with. This exercise regimen should also include mental stimulation and can include activities like obedience training, agility, fetch, and nose work. Additionally, make sure to provide plenty of opportunity for social interaction with other dogs and people.
