Questions & Answers
A Cavalier King Charles is a small breed of dog that is friendly, outgoing, and intelligent. While incredibly popular as a companion pet, Cavalier King Charles dogs originally descended from Toy Spaniels from the 17th century, and were named after the court of King Charles II of England. They have luxuriously silky hair that comes in two color varieties Blenheim, referring to a reddish-brown fur trimmed in white, and Tricolor, referring to black, white and tan fur.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel coat is generally a silky, medium-length single coat. Its texture is somewhat unique in that it's wavy yet soft and hangs closely to the body. It can come in a variety of colours, such as black and tan, ruby, tri-coloured and blenheim. In addition, the coat is generally low-shedding and requires little maintenance. However, brushing should be done every few weeks to keep the coat looking shiny and healthy.
Cavaliers King Charles Spaniels should not be given food with a lot of filler ingredients, such as corn, wheat, and soy, as these ingredients are not the most nutritionally beneficial. Additionally, try to stay away from treats with added sugars, syrups, raisins, grapes, onions, garlic, and chocolates as these can be very toxic to the breed. Avoid feeding them bones, including pig ears, as this can lead to blockages or causing other gastrointestinal issues.
Before getting a Cavalier King Charles, it's important to purchase essential items that will make them comfortable. You'll need food and water bowls, a durable leash and collar, appropriate toys and treats, potty training pads, a bed, grooming supplies, and potty bags. Additionally, you should create a safe environment for your Cavalier King Charles, ensuring that any potential dangers are child proofed or blocked from their access. Finally, it's wise to purchase pet insurance to provide financial security should your pup experience any medical issues.
While some people may consider Cavalier King Charles Spaniels to be big dogs, they are actually categorized as a small to medium-sized breed by the American Kennel Club. The males of this breed are typically around 12 to 13 inches tall and can weigh up to 30 pounds at their full adult size. Females of this breed can reach a slightly smaller size of 11 to 12 inches and weigh anywhere between 14 and 18 pounds. Generally, these dogs are gentle, playful and quite friendly, making them ideal companions for households with children.
Walking your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an important part of their daily activity and should not be taken lightly. How long of a walk each day is a personal decision and should be based on your dog's age, breed, and overall health. On average, a adult Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can benefit from between 15-30 minutes of exercise every day. However, if your particular Cavalier King Charles is young, active, or elderly, they may require more or less, respectively.
Absolutely! Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a wonderful breed for families. They are incredibly gentle and friendly, typically getting along well with children and other pets. They are also small enough to be a great companion for small apartments and heating and cooling systems. Cavaliers are easy to train and love to please their owners, so they require minimal correction and are easy to handle. Additionally, Cavaliers often live life to the fullest and experience a great sense of joy every day, making them not only a great companion for your family, but also a source of great positivity and happiness.
There is no set answer to the question of how many minutes per day should be devoted to training your Cavalier King Charles. It depends on the individual pup's needs and activity level. Some dogs may require only 15-30 minutes per day while others may need an hour or more. The best way to assess this is to monitor your pet's energy level, observe their response to simple commands and determine a training plan that is tailored to their learning style and natural skill set. Generally speaking, it is recommended to provide your Cavalier with mental stimulation and physical exercise for at least 30 minutes per day.
