Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are small dogs with huge personalities. They often have three distinct colorings named "Tri Color," "Blenheim" and "Ruby." Blenheims have a unique chestnut-and-white color combination, and Rubies are solid red. The breed traditionally enjoyed the company of the aristocracy and some of their early owners include Mary Queen of Scots and King Charles II. Despite their 12-14 inch height, they are famously brave dogs and have been known to stand up to bigger dogs and even foxes in defense of their owners.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels do not require regular clipping to manage their fur and are considered a "low-shed" breed. They still do shed, but their shedding is less than other breeds, making them attractive to those who prefer less hair in the home. This genetic trait also means that coat care is minimal, and brushing once or twice a week is usually enough to keep their coat looking shiny and healthy. Even though they are categorized as low-shedding, they will still require some regular grooming such as regular baths and a good brush-out between baths.
It is best to avoid feeding Cavalier King Charles any food that is not specifically designed for dogs. Foods to avoid include grapes, raisins, onions, chocolates, macadamia nuts, sugar, artificial sweeteners, alcohol, coffee, caffeine, fatty table scraps, raw meat, and raw eggs. Some very common human foods, even if they are not inherently toxic, can be difficult for dogs to digest, such as beans, cereal grains, and cooked bones. Ideally, a diet for a Cavalier King Charles should consist of a high-quality, species appropriate commercial food.
Before bringing home your new Cavalier King Charles, it’s important to make sure you have all of the essentials they’ll need. Start with selecting a proper collar and leash for walking. Next, you’ll need to find the perfect bedding so they can rest comfortably. Have plenty of treats and toys on hand for training and fun. Don’t forget a first-aid kit which can be kept with you when going out. Select the right food and dishes for feeding, as well as a grooming brush and shampoo.
The average size for Cavalier King Charles is around 12 13 inches at the shoulder, weighing 13 18 pounds. They are considered a small breed, with a compact body and long ears, chest, and legs. The breed does have breed standards + a range of 13 18 pounds is recommended, and males can weigh up to 20 pounds. Overall, the breed has a graceful, active appearance, and an even, silky coat that may be either smooth or wavy.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can make great swimming companions! Though not all of them have a natural affinity for water, many enjoy taking a dip. This breed is energetic, athletic, and can be taught to swim. They are also very good at retrieving objects in the pool, so it's an activity that is both enjoyable and educational for them. While you should never force your dog to swim, it can be a great way to cool off on a hot day and provide exercise.
Absolutely! Cavalier King Charles Spaniels make for wonderful family dogs. Friendly and sociable, they are full of energy and life and this makes them ideal companions for families as they are full of enthusiasm when it comes to playing games. Their trainable nature, intelligence, and loyalty makes them an excellent choice for novice owners. Further, their lovely temperament makes them a real asset to households; they fit in with any family environment and their affectionate nature creates lasting relationships with everyone they meet.
The amount of time needed to train a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel each day depends on the individual dog and his level of learning. Generally, you should aim for about 15-20 minutes of dedicated training time a day. However, the most important factor is to make sure it's a positive experience for your pet. Be sure to break up the sessions into slower, manageable chunks and end each one on a positive note. Additionally, always reward desired behavior and practice consistency so that your canine companion knows what is expected of him.
