Questions & Answers
Cavaliers King Charles dogs are often thought of as a beloved companion dog. They are a class of small spaniels from the toy group and have a kind, gentle nature. With their silky coats they look similar to the larger King Charles Spaniel but have a very distinct personality. Cavaliers are friendly and outgoing, making them wonderful dogs for families with kids, retirees or singles alike. They are also highly intelligent, coming in four distinct colors, and have been bred for centuries as a lap dog for royalty.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered hypoallergenic, meaning they don't typically shed much fur or dander. They do still shed a small amount of hair, but it usually is so minimal that it isn't even noticed. If shedding is a concern, there are other breeds of dogs that may be better suited, however, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are definitely a breed that may be suitable if you want a non-shedding pet. Their coats are made up of feathery fur which requires regular grooming to maintain and shed very little.
It is important to make sure that Cavalier King Charles Spaniels do not consume food that can be harmful or toxic to them. Human food such as chocolate, grapes and raisins, onions, garlic, and any food with artificial sweeteners, preservatives, added salt, and/or added sugar should be avoided as they can be toxic. Other things that should also be avoided are rawhide bones, raw large pieces of meat, and dairy products.
Before getting a Cavalier King Charles, you should equip your home with some essential items. First, a comfy bed or cushion so your pup can sleep in comfort and provide a place to retreat. Second, a few quality toys that are suitable for the size of your pup, as well as durable and able to withstand chewing. Third, a few treats to reward your pup when they're behaving well. Fourth, some sturdy chew toys to help your pup with teething and keep them occupied. Fifth, a good brush or comb, depending on your pup's coat.
Generally, a fully grown Cavalier King Charles Spaniel will be between 12 and 13 inches tall at the shoulder, and weigh between 13 to 18 pounds. However, it is important to note that the puppy's eventual size is determined by a variety of factors including diet, exercise, hereditary traits, and general health. In other words, every puppy will grow at its own rate, and there is no single guaranteed answer to the question of its eventual size.
Yes, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are active dogs who need daily exercise and stimulation. They love outdoor game and activity, including games of fetch, long walks, and romping in the backyard wherever possible. They make excellent jogging or running companions, particularly in warmer weather. In addition, these highly trainable, loving dogs excel in agility training, sports such as flyball and obedience, and even therapy or service dog roles.
While it can vary depending on their upbringing and individual personalities, generally Cavalier King Charles Spaniels tend to do well with other pets such as cats and other dogs in the household. If properly socialized and introduced, Cavaliers can become fast friends with other animals. That said, proper supervision is still recommended for the first few meetings and through the establishment of their ongoing relationship. Since they are smaller in size, caution should be taken with larger pets that may overpower them unintentionally.
The exact amount of minutes you should spend training your Cavalier King Charles each day will depend on the age, temperament, and experience of your pup. It is recommended that puppies have a maximum of 15 minutes of training per day, while adult Cavaliers may need 30-45 minutes to learn new habits and behaviors. It is important to note that physical exercise is also vital to the health and wellbeing of your pup, so you should plan to spend at least an extra 30 minutes a day in activities like going for walks or playing in a fenced yard.
