Questions & Answers
One of the most interesting things about Cavalier King Charles Spaniels is that they have a reputation of being the eternal lapdog! This small breed of dog is known for its strong desire to be close to their owners and pour out their unconditional love. They love to be pampered and have a cheerful, charming personality that can bring a smile to everyone's face. Despite their size, they are quite the active breed and love to play a variety of games and activities. They also enjoy mental stimulation and often excel at activities such as agility and nosework.
Unfortunately, the short answer is no, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not hypoallergenic. Though their coat is shorter than other spaniels, they can still trigger allergies due to their shedding. Allergies are often triggered by pet dander in the air. Dander is the fine particles that float off a pet's skin or coat. This dander carries proteins that can aggravate allergies. Some people still choose to own Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (or other non-hypoallergenic canines) despite their allergies.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known for their friendly, outgoing personalities, but what do they actually eat? As a medium-sized breed, their nutritional needs are not too complex. Experts recommend feeding these dogs quality, high-protein foods with added fatty acids in order to keep them healthy. Depending on their age, size, and activity level, they may require two to four small, balanced meals throughout the day to support their energy needs. Oftentimes, owners will opt to feed a dry kibble that has been specifically developed for the breed.
Cavalier King Charles have some particular requirements that need to be met in order to keep them healthy and happy. First and foremost, it's important to keep the coat of the Cavalier King Charles well-groomed by brushing regularly to remove excess fur and preventing matting. Other than that, they typically need to be walked every day, given appropriate amounts of healthy food and get a yearly vet checkup. They also need to be kept away from strong chemicals since they are particularly sensitive. Furthermore, they need to be socialized and stimulated with toys and regular playtime.
The size of a Cavalier King Charles puppy will depend on whether it is male or female as the former tends to be a bit larger. On average, a male Cavalier King Charles puppy will measure 12 to 13 inches in height and weigh 13 to 18 pounds, while female puppies will measure 11 to 12 inches in height and weigh between 12 and 17 pounds. It is worth noting that the size of the puppy may still change as it grows and develops, however the difference in weight and height between male and female puppies should remain fairly consistent.
It is recommended that Cavalier King Charles owners provide their pooches with at least 30 minutes of activity per day. That said, the activity can be divided up into two 15-minute or three 10-minute walks, depending on the individual's preferences and needs. Walks should take the pup to a variety of locations, offering them the opportunity to engage in different scents and sounds. Regular activity also helps support cardiovascular and muscular health in addition to promoting healthy mental stimulation.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can make great pets for first-time owners, provided the owner is prepared to provide consistent training and care. Cavaliers are incredibly loyal and affectionate, and are known for being great family pets. With proper training, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can learn basic commands, such as “sit” and “stay”, making them easier to handle. However, it is important for first-time owners to research the breed to ensure they are prepared to provide the attention and exercise Cavaliers need and to prevent potential problems down the road.
Training a Cavalier King Charles may depend on the individual dog's personality, however, in general, they are an intelligent and willing breed which makes them fairly easy to train. With consistent, gentle, yet firm handling and lots of positive reinforcement, it is possible to train them basic commands such as 'sit', 'stay', and 'come'. It may take some patience and work to establish good communication but they will respond well to consistent training. The earlier they receive training the easier and faster it will be for both the owner and their Cavalier King Charles.
