Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are more than just beautiful, intelligent dogs they hold a special, unique historical place in the world. Though this breed has a long lineage that dates back centuries, they were actually formed when King Charles II of England decided that he wanted to have a new kind of breed that encompassed both his maltese lapdogs and toy spaniels. Though their history is rich with aristocratic ownership, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a charming and endearing personality and is affectionate with its owners and even strangers making it a perfect pet for any family.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small-medium sized breed of dog that has a beautiful coat. It is silky and feathered with a slight wave, and generally white with tones of chestnut, black, white and tan. This coat requires regular brushing and it doesn't shed much, so it's an ideal choice for people who don't like a lot of pet hair in their home. The breed is affectionate, loyal and intelligent, and they can adapt to a variety of living environments.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, originating in the 17th century, are known for their friendly demeanor and pleasant disposition. As such, their nutrition is important to keep them happy and healthy. Primarily, they eat meat-based dry kibble or wet canned food which contains protein from meat, egg, or fish sources. Additionally, they can benefit from foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids like vegetables, fruits, and grains to meet their daily nutrient requirements. Table scraps may occasionally be appropriated but should be low fat and offered in moderation.
Before getting a Cavalier King Charles, it is important to make sure that you have the necessary essentials. You will need high-quality dog food, medical supplies, like flea and tick treatments, a safe and comfortable crate or bed, leashes and collars, plenty of toys, and grooming supplies. Also, considering that Cavaliers are prone to certain health conditions, you should also consult with your vet about any specific dietary needs or preventative care that should be taken into account.
When discussing size, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCS) generally fall in the category of small-sized dogs due to their average weight of 13-18 pounds. That being said, they may appear slightly larger than other small breed dogs because they have a relatively long body and somewhat of a heavier coat. Furthermore, their rather delightful energetic personalities can often give off the impression of a large, well-spirited breed. All in all, as their name suggests they are considered to be 'small' but charming dogs that can easily melt your heart.
Walking your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an important part of providing enrichment and exercise for them. How much you should walk them each day will depend on their age and activity level. A general guideline is to give an adult Cavalier about 30-60 minutes of walking each day. Puppies should get about 20-30 minutes a day. If you would like to increase the amount of walking but don't have the time, you can split up the walking time into shorter periods throughout the day.
Generally speaking, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can successfully get along with other pets in the household such as cats, small birds, and other dogs. When introducing a new animal to the home, it is important to take the transition slowly and provide plenty of positive reinforcement, such as treats and verbal praise, when your dog behaves appropriately around the other pet. As with any new relationship between two animals, close supervision is important at first. Maintaining a predictable daily routine is also very beneficial for all animals living together.
Training your Cavalier King Charles is relatively straightforward, and done best when the pup is young. It's important to make the process positive, rewarding the pup for good behavior and providing lots of love. You should start by teaching basic obedience commands like sit and stay, and progress to things such as heel and come. You can use a clicker to communicate with your pet and reward good behaviors. Try to keep the training sessions short around 15 minutes at a time so the pup doesn't get overwhelmed or bored.
