They are descended from toy spaniels that were kept by European royal families in the 1500s. Charles II of England and Scotland kept Cavaliers in 1665 and he is credited with popularizing the breed. While their luxurious coats and playful demeanor remain a favorite of royalty today, they have melted the hearts of many ordinary people worldwide. While other toy breeds have been bred to accentuate the flat face, the Cavalier retains the more natural appearance of the Spaniel breed.
The Cavalier King Charles has an attractive, silky double coat. Delicately wavy, the outer coat is medium length, while the undercoat is soft and thick. This breed of dog loves to be brushed and should be groomed regularly to prevent mats. They tend to have an even distribution of soft fur that can appear in a range of colors including black and sable, blenheim, ruby, and tricolor.
