Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a long history since their creation in the 16th century. Not only were they beloved by European monarchs, but they’re also one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States today. It's been said they were bred to blend the Maltese and Toy Spaniel characteristics. Fun facts include the breeds’ eagerness to learn and affectionate nature. On average, they have a life expectancy of about 12 to 15 years. Although they are small, their gentle nature makes them great family dogs for children and adults alike.
The Cavalier King Charles coat is short, silky and wavy. It typically has a feathered fineness which may include slight tossing on a smooth body coat. The most common colors for Cavalier coats are Blenheim (red and white), Tri-color (black, tan and white), Ruby (solid mahogany red), Black and Tan (black and tan) and Black and White (black with white markings). These coats are not typically hypoallergenic, and they should be groomed regularly to keep them healthy and free of tangles and mats.
Despite their love for eating, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels should not be fed table scraps or fatty meats due to the chance of high cholesterol levels. In addition, they should not be given anything with a high concentration of sodium or sugar; this can cause digestive and skin issues in this breed. Furthermore, any type of rawhide bones, sweets, or fruits with a high calorie content can be dangerous. It's best to stick to kibble and low-calorie and low-sodium treats for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.
Before getting a Cavalier King Charles, it's essential to prepare for a safe and happy home experience. Make sure to equip yourself with the supplies necessary for their ongoing care including a hight-quality,Veterinarian-approved dog food and treats, appropriate bedding and blankets, chew-resistant toys and items made for small dogs, and a collar with an identification tag. Depending on your lifestyle you may also wish to look into purchasing a good brush for daily grooming, a water bowl, and any necessary medication for flea and tick control or other health needs.
Although there are a variety of sizes within the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed, most individuals fall into the small dog category. Most adult Cavaliers weigh between 10 and 18 pounds and on average are only 12-13 inches tall, making them considered a small breed. That being said, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can have an almost toy-like appearance that can be a bit deceiving because of their bold, spunky personalities and their willingness to be active. Despite their size, they have a tendency to be very bold in demeanor and to blend seamlessly into larger families.
Yes! Taking your Cavalier King Charles running can provide several benefits. It gives your pup the opportunity to get the exercise they need and can help release built-up energy. Running can also help stimulate their mind and keep them fit. However, it's important to be aware of the breed's specific physical needs and limitations. Cavaliers tend to tire quickly, so it's good to keep running sessions relatively short and pay close attention to your pup for signs of heat exhaustion or over-exertion.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are generally a good choice for first-time owners due to their amicable nature and adaptable personalities. They have an affable temperament, so they get along well with strangers and other pets. They also make for easy maintenance as they are relatively low energy and don't require much exercise. Furthermore, they are fairly small in size, so they don't require a lot of space and can travel easily. Their sweet disposition sometimes lends them to become lap dogs, so if you're looking for a more sedentary pup, these little guys are a great fit.
Training a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel should be a daily routine. Depending on the age and experience of your dog, the amount of time you spend training can vary. Generally, you should dedicate at least 15 minutes a day of positive, productive training that can include teaching commands, such as sit, stay, come, down, and leave it, as well as teaching basic life skills like walking on a leash, potty training, and basic manners.
