Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles is a small-medium breed of dog that originated in England in the 1600's and has been bred since to have gentle temperaments and friendly personalities. The breed is known for its long, silky fur which is usually tricolor—blenheim (chestnut and white), black and tan, or ruby—all of which commonly possess beautiful dark eyes and long feathery ears. The average Cavalier King Charles should be between 12 and 13 inches at the withers and between 13 and 18 pounds in weight.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a smooth, silky coat that comes in a variety of colors, including black and tan, ruby, tricolor, blenheim (red and white), or a combination of the three. It is usually short, but can have a moderate amount of feathering at the chest, ears, legs and feet. They are a small breed, but their coat is quite full and luxurious. The natural sheen of their coat gives them a regal appearance, and grooming is minimal with only occasional brushing and baths.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are an active breed with a diet that needs to be carefully managed. Their diet should consist of a quality, high-protein dry kibble (or wet food) as well as meat and vegetables, like chicken, pork, beef, yogurt, egg, broccoli, sweet potatoes, peas, carrots, and other nutritious vegetables. It's important that any food given is agreed upon by the veterinarian, as every dog's dietary needs are different. For optimal health, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels should also be given a balanced supplement of essential vitamins and minerals.
It's important to have the proper supplies, toys, and plenty of love when welcoming a new Cavalier King Charles into your home. Before your pup arrives, be sure to have an appropriate crate/carrier and bed to provide comfort and security. Additionally, bowls for food and water should be purchased as well as lots of age-appropriate, durable toys and various treats suitable for training. Next, brush up on housebreaking and basic obedience techniques; this will help establish a routine and understanding of acceptable behaviors.
The size of your Cavalier King Charles puppy will depend on its gender. On average, female puppies are generally between 12-14 inches in height and weigh between 13-18 pounds, while male puppies tend to be between 13-15 inches and weigh between 14-19 pounds. Of course, your puppy may end up as an exception to these guidelines and be a larger or smaller size than its gender's average growth size. It's important to remember that a healthy adult size is dependent on quality care as a puppy and during adulthood.
The question of whether Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKC) like to swim is not easily answerable across all individuals. That being said, most owners and breeders report that CKC are easily trained to swim and generally enjoy splashing around in water. The breed's size, slightly wavy coat, and pom-pom tail were all bred specifically for a purpose––swimming in order to retrieve game from marshes and streams.
Cavaliers King Charles Spaniel are a great breed to have around children as they are gentle, loving, and playful companions. Generally, they do get along with kids and get very excited when their families have visitors. They love attention and affection and make wonderful family dogs. They don't require a lot of exercise, so they're ideal if you have children who don't have active lifestyles. It is important to socialise Cavaliers King Charles from a young age and to teach children to handle the dogs with care and respect.
Training your Cavalier King Charles will require patience and respect. Working with them regularly and offering positive reinforcement is key to bringing out the best in your pup. Consistent cues that reward good behavior and gently correct bad behavior will help cement the behaviors that you want your pup to learn. Creating positive associations through positive reinforcement can help your pup to learn quickly and happily, and you'll likely find that your pup remains intent and engaged in the training process. Offering praise, treats and snuggling during and after training sessions will help ensure that the lessons stick.
