Questions & Answers
One of the most beloved small dog breeds, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, have many exciting facts. For starters, the breed was named after King Charles II of England. They've been around since the 16th century and were named after the King due to their popularity with the Royal Family. The four recognized color variations of the breed are Blenheim, Ruby, Tricolor, and Black & Tan. Additionally, Cavaliers are an incredibly active and friendly breed that loves to be around their owners.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered to be an average shedding breed, meaning that they do shed a moderate amount. However, Cavaliers are hypoallergenic and do not shed heavily so they are often the perfect pet for those with allergies. The breed's coat is known to consist of a combination of long-hair with a wavy texture and since they are also considered to have a single layer coat, they tend to shed very little compared to other breeds. Cavaliers are known to require minimal grooming, which often helps to keep their shedding to a minimum.
Finding the best dog food for a Cavalier King Charles can be a challenge. However, as with any breed, your pet's diet should be tailored specifically to them. The best diet for this breed is a combination of dry and wet food that is specifically designed for small breed dogs. Dry food should be high quality and rich in proteins; wet food should include omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and other beneficial vitamins and minerals. To avoid any potential dental issues, food should also feature small kibble that is easy to chew.
To best prepare for a new Cavalier King Charles, it is important to research the breed to understand its behavior and needs. Understanding and meeting their exercise, grooming, and socialization requirements is key to having a successful relationship with your pet. It is also essential to have the necessary supplies ready prior to bringing your puppy home, such as food and water bowls, a crate, dog toys, and a soft bedding area. Finally, it is important to create a set of house rules to ensure your pup’s safety and appropriate behavior in your home.
Cavalier King Charles are generally considered small to medium-sized dogs. While there can be variations within the breed, the average height and weight of a Cavalier King Charles is between 12-13 inches tall and 13-18 pounds in weight. That being said, the Cavalier King Charles can still appear larger due to its longer, fluffier coat. Additionally, they are relatively active dogs and have outgoing personalities, making the breed appear bigger than it is. However, when compared to most bigger breeds, the Cavalier King Charles is still small in comparison.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are water-loving dogs that enjoy swimming. They have a natural instinct for it and have good natural swimming ability. They are considered to have the most natural of canine water-loving traits. In addition to swimming, many Cavalier King Charles Spaniels enjoy playing in a kiddie pool, fetching toys in water, and/or jumping off docks or into lakes. While they aren’t as proficient at swimming as a Labrador Retriever or Golden Retriever, they still love to participate in the fun.
Generally speaking, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels get along well with other pets provided proper socialization has occurred and both animals have been raised with a familiarity and understanding of one another. These dogs are often very friendly and adaptable to other pets. With patience and consistency, owners can ensure their Cavaliers and other animals in the household coexist harmoniously. Regular playtime and activities together can also help foster a strong bond between the canine and other animals in the home.
Training your Cavalier King Charles is important for obedience and to ensure it is a well-mannered companion. The best way to start is to use positive reinforcement such as treats and verbal praises to reward your pup for good behavior. Providing consistent training will help your pup learn which behaviors are allowed and which are not. Taking your pup to puppy classes or obedience classes can also help you learn how to best train your pup. Regular training sessions and reinforcing good behaviors are of utmost importance. Make sure you also spending quality time with your pup and provide plenty of playtime and fun activities.
