Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are small, friendly, gentle dogs that make great family pets. These dogs are loyal and thrive in interaction with their family. Although they do require grooming, regular brushing and occasional bathing will keep them looking their best. They enjoy activities like long walks and outdoor play, but can also be content with indoors activities such as playing games and cuddling on the couch. While they're generally healthy, they can succumb to hereditary health issues such as hydrocephalus, luxating patella, and syringomyelia.
While it's true that some people can be allergic to animals, it doesn't necessarily mean that Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are an automatic allergy trigger. Those with allergies should take the necessary precautions to ensure that the environment is serene for them, but it is possible to manage these allergies without having to forgo a Cavalier King Charles or other pet. Regular vacuuming, using air filters and changing bedding regularly are all excellent ways for those with allergies to coexist peacefully alongside these four-legged friends.
Feeding a Cavalier King Charles the wrong food can cause health issues that can dramatically reduce their quality of life. Therefore, you should not feed your Cavalier King Charles raw meats, table scraps, bones, chocolate, grapes, alcohol, caffeine or xylitol. Most of these products contain toxins that can cause serious harm, so it's important to keep an eye on your canine companion when offering treats and snacks. While dogs require a certain amount of fat in their diet, it's important to choose low-fat supplements and foods.
Before purchasing a Cavalier King Charles, there are some essential items you should purchase. These include a crate or kennel for the dog, a comfortable bed to curl up in, a leash, collar, and ID tag in case they get lost, plenty of chew toys and treats for mental stimulation and training, and bowls for food and water. Don't forget to get all the necessary grooming and dental tools, such as a brush, toothbrush, clippers, etc.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a medium-sized breed, typically growing up to 12 to 13 inches tall and 13 to 18 pounds in weight. Their size usually tops out at this point, though they may get bigger depending on diet, activity levels, and other factors. They are an active and elegant breed, with long fur that can give the appearance of larger size but don't let the fluff fool you!
Absolutely! Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breeds are known for their love of water and swimming. They especially love having the opportunity to cool off in the summer months. Swimming is a great way for them to get some exercise, as this breed has a tendency to become a bit lazy if not properly stimulated. Not only are Cavaliers strong swimmers, but also many owners describe them as almost ocean-like creatures due to their enthusiasm when it comes to being in the water. In addition, swimming helps strengthen their legs which improves their overall agility and mobility.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can make wonderful family companions, and many of them can coexist peacefully with children. That said, as with any breed, socialization and obedience training are key for a successful relationship between a pet and kids. If done properly, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can learn how to interact in an appropriate manner with children and become a loving playmate. Certain CKC puppies may be more affable with kids than others, so it may be worth taking the time to get to know a dog's personality before committing to a family pet.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are renowned for their intelligence and are highly trainable, making them great companions. They were bred for the purpose of being a lapdog, so they possess an instinct to please their caregivers. Through consistent training they can learn an array of tricks or commands, retrieve directions or items, and be an adept guardian of their family. In addition, Cavaliers can be taught to alert their owners to the presence of people or strange noises. This makes them excellent watchdogs.
