Questions & Answers
The Cavalier King Charles is a small breed of toy spaniel that originated in the United Kingdom during the 1600's. The breed was named after King Charles II, who particularly favored these charming little dogs. They became popular lapdogs and this breed was often associated with royalty. Today, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are sought after family companion dogs that display gentle, loving personalities. This breed weighs in at 8-18 pounds, have a luxurious and silky coat, along with a moderate activity level and great overall health.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are classified as moderate-shedding dogs. Although they do not shed as much as other breeds, they do have periods of shedding when they change or lose their coats during different seasons. Usually, when proper diet, exercise, and grooming are maintained, their shedding can be managed effectively. It is important to brush and comb their fur regularly in order to control their shedding, as well as to ensure their coat remains clean and healthy.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCS) have different nutritional needs than other breeds, so the best dog food for this breed will depend on its age, activity level, health status, and individual nutritional needs. For puppies, high-quality puppy food should be chosen to ensure that the puppy gets all the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals it needs for healthy growth. Adult CKCS should be fed a diet that supports overall wellness; look for formulas containing real meat as the first ingredient and a blend of carbohydrates such as whole grains, legumes, and fruits.
Prior to bringing home your Cavalier King Charles, it's important to get your home ready and make sure it’s a safe and comfortable environment for your new pup. Clear away any hazardous chemicals, cords, and small items that can be detrimental to your pet's safety. Place bedding in a quiet area of the home, and provide plenty of toys and chew items to provide stimulation. Additionally, establish an area for feeding and watering in order to promote healthy eating habits. Consider also investing in a gate or playpen to create an area to safely contain the pup.
While Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not among the largest dog breeds, they aren't considered small either. Typically these dogs are about 12-13 inches high and can weigh from 12 to 18 pounds. However, these dogs have been bred for long bodies and their heft can make them appear and feel larger than their actual size. When it comes to their stature, they are quite distinctly in the middle of the road.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs are an active breed that requires plenty of exercise to stay healthy and happy. Generally speaking, these dogs will need at least 20-30 minutes of physical activity a few days a week. The activity can include leash walks, playing fetch, exploring a backyard, or any other activity that gives them physical and mental stimulation. Whether it's a walk in a park or running in a fenced-in area, it's important to get your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel up and moving on a regular basis.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are generally friendly, affectionate dogs and make wonderful companions for a family with children. They are easy-going in nature, patient and loving, which allows them to make great playmates for kids as long as the child is gentle and respectful. Cavilers tend to be good-natured and cuddly, often wanting to be around their owners constantly. They tend to learn quickly and are responsive to training, so there's no need to worry about them running wild.
The specific amount of minutes per day that you need to train your Cavalier King Charles varies depending on your pooch's individual stamina and needs. When beginning to train a Cavalier King Charles, it is important to start slow, introducing no more than 10-15 minutes of exercise per day. Once your pup is comfortable with this routine, gradually add more time each week as your pup becomes more fit and their stamina improves. Generally speaking, Cavalier King Charles should be given no more than an hour of activity each day, such as walks or other exercise.
