Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a sweet, loyal, and gentle disposition, which makes them excellent companion dogs. They were the favored companion of Britain's King Charles for many centuries. The breed was specifically bred for the sole purpose of providing companionship to royalty and the upper classes, which is why they are considered to be one of the most elegant of all breeds. One of their most distinguishing features is their luxurious, soft, long, and slightly wavy coat. This breed is also physical active, and they are known for their enthusiasm and agility.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered low-shedding toy breeds. They have a soft, silky coat that typically does not produce large amounts of shedding or dander. However, regular brushing and grooming is recommended to help reduce shedding and to keep the coat healthy and looking its best. That being said, even with regular grooming and care, some shedding is normal in a large breed like the Cavalier.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels require a diet made up of high-quality dry dog food with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables for an extra boost of vitamins and minerals. Protein should come from wholesome sources such as fish, eggs, or poultry. Meats such as beef, lamb, venison, and rabbit are also acceptable. For snacks, offer a few pieces of raw vegetables and fruits like spinach, carrot, apple, celery, and watermelon. These provide essential nutrients without calories and sugar.
In order to ensure your new Cavalier King Charles is comfortable in your home, it's important to prepare ahead of time. Begin by making sure your home is puppy-proof; secure any cords and wires, remove toxic plants, cover any dangerous nooks or crannies. You also want to make sure that areas your puppy will be spending time in are equipped with the necessary items: bowls for food and water, a comfortable bed, and plenty of toys to chew on. If you’re crate-training, make sure to set up a secure space for them to feel safe.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs come in two sizes: toy and standard. Toy Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are usually between 12 and 13 inches in height at the shoulder and weigh no more than 18 pounds. Standard Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are between 13 and 16 inches high at the shoulder and weigh no more than 20 pounds. These sizes may vary slightly between breeders, and many consider miniature sizes to also be acceptable.
Yes, you can take your Cavalier King Charles running, depending on your destination and the weather conditions. Cavaliers have excellent stamina and are generally very active, so regular exercise such as running should be part of their routine. However, keep in mind that taking a dog running can be unpredictable and tricky. Therefore, be sure to properly assess and evaluate your pet's overall health, physical condition and activity level before you embark on any long-distance run with your Cavalier King Charles.
Absolutely! Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known for their gentle and sweet dispositions, making them wonderful family dogs. They’re eager to please, and make excellent playmates for kids. They’re smart and willing to learn, so with a little patience and plenty of love, they can be easily trained. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels enjoy physical contact with their people, and often look for lap-time with children. They may even become a child's best friend and companion.
Training a Cavalier King Charles can take time and commitment, however, most owners report that it is relatively easy in comparison to some other breeds. As with any type of training, success is dependent on how much effort both the owner and the pup are willing to put in. Consistency is important when training any pet and an experienced trainer can help you and your Cavalier become successful more quickly. An advantage of the Cavalier is that they are both bright and eager to please, which makes proper training much simpler.
