Questions & Answers
One of the most interesting things about Cavapoos is their hybrid breeding and a history that dates back to the late 1990s when the cross-breeding of Cavachons—a mix of a Bichon Frise and a King Charles Cavalier—became popular in the United States. This unique mix of small-breed hybrid dogs combines the best traits of two popular breeds, creating a wonderful pet with a combination of personality, intelligence, and a low-shedding coat.
The Cavapoo coat is typically described as wool-like and may range from wavy to curly, depending on the dog's parents. It's usually a mix between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel’s and a Poodle's coat, and lies close to the body. They often sport a two-tone combination as the underlying base coat will have a color coming from the Cavalier Spaniel while the darker end of the color spectrum comes from the Poodle.
Cavapoos are a cross-breed of a Poodle and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and have the same dietary needs as their parent breeds. A Cavapoo’s diet is largely determined by his age. Puppy Cavapoos should only have puppy-formulated food, while adult Cavapoos need a specifically balanced diet of proteins, carbohydrates, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. High quality, dry dog food is the best source of nutrition for a Cavapoo’s diet, but treats, fresh cooked foods and supplements can be included.
Cavapoos typically require the same level of care and attention as any other breed of dog. As a result, they need regular exercise, a healthy diet, plenty of love and attention and consistent training and grooming. In terms of unique requirements, Cavapoos are typically an allergy-friendly breed, making them a popular choice for people with allergies. They also require occasional clipping of their fur to help prevent tangling and matting, as they have a curlier coat than other breeds. As they are a fairly active breed, they require plenty of playtime and exercise each day.
Cavapoos are considered to be small dogs, based on size and weight. Generally, male Cavapoos reach up to 14-18 pounds in weight and 12-14 inches in height, while female Cavapoos can range from 10-15 pounds and 11-13 inches. They have a moderate energy level and require a moderate level of exercise. Cavapoos have great personalities and tend to form strong bonds with their owners. Due to this, they do best in an environment where they can form connections and interact with their family.
Absolutely! Cavapoos love to take a dip in the water, providing it's not too cold. The breed is known for its outgoing, friendly, and active behavior, and swimming is a great way to channel this energy in a safe and fun way. Swimming is also an excellent way for Cavapoos to get exercise and stay healthy. However, it is always important to closely monitor your pup while they are in the water, as safety should always be a priority.
Cavapoos make excellent family dogs! Not only do they possess a loving personality, they are also quite intelligent, generally low-shedding, and easy to train. As a result, they thrive in families with children and also make great companions for single people and retirees. Furthermore, Cavapoos enjoy interacting with others and rarely become aggressive. To stay healthy, they only require moderate exercise, making them ideal for small spaces and busy schedules. Additionally, they love to cuddle and are known for being a loyal dog.
Training a Cavapoo is an important part of the ownership process. The best approach is to start as early as possible, teaching basic commands and providing positive reinforcement. You'll also want to create a consistent routine so your Cavapoo knows what to expect. Start by showing your pup patience and positive reinforcement small treats or rewards are a great way to motivate and reward good behavior. As your Cavapoo learns basic commands like sit, stay, and come, you can begin to work on more complex behaviors like walking on a leash and playing fetch.
