Questions & Answers
Cavapoos are a designer breed, created by crossing a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Toy or Miniature Poodle. They are known for being intelligent and affectionate, and they have been bred to have low-shedding fur which makes them great family pets. Cavapoos have a unique look with a mix of the fathers, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and the mother's, the Poodle's, fur. They can come in a rainbow of colors and coat types, and they often have the characteristic wavy fur of a Poodle.
Cavapoos typically have a soft, fluffy coat that is often described as "teddy bear-like" in texture. Given their size, cavapoos do not need extensive grooming and the coat comes in a variety of colors, including white, cream, apricot, red, black and brown. The coat can be either a single layer or it may be double-coated.
Feeding your Cavapoo a nutrient-rich, high-quality diet is important for their lifelong health. The best way to ensure they are getting all the nutrients their growing bodies require is to consult with your veterinarian for dietary advice tailored to your pup. While dry foods are generally considered to be the ideal daily diet for Cavapoos, supplementation with canned, fresh, or frozen food can be beneficial depending on the individual nutritional needs of your pup. Raw diets can also be beneficial for Cavapoos, but only when done properly and under the guidance of a veterinarian or experienced pet nutritionist.
To best prepare your home for the arrival of your new Cavapoo, first make sure that there is a safe and secure environment for them and that all wires, cords, and electronics are tucked away. Make sure any potentially dangerous materials such as cleaning products, fertilizers, and insect products are kept securely out of reach. Additionally, look for objects or furniture that may be easily toppled, damaged, or destroyed by your pup. Pet-proof everything! Next, designate a safe and cozy space for them to rest.
Cavapoos are generally considered to be a small breed, ranging in size from 12 to 18 pounds and standing at roughly 8 to 14 inches in height. Depending on their parent lineage, Cavapoos can come in a variety of sizes. Some Cavapoo Parents can be Toy Poodles, which are considerably smaller than their Standard Poodle counterparts, heightening the likelihood of producing smaller puppies. Conversely, if either parent is a Standard Poodle, it's possible to create a puppy that is significantly larger than 18 pounds, which is still considered appropriate for the breed.
Absolutely! Taking your Cavapoo running is a great way for them to get exercise and have fun. However, before you go for a run with your pup, you'll want to make sure your pup is old enough and healthy enough for the activity. Pups between the ages of two and four months may be too young for running, and you'll want to talk to your vet to make sure your pup is physically healthy and fit enough for running. Something else to consider is your pup's environment.
Generally, Cavapoos get along very well with children of all ages. They are a friendly and affectionate breed that loves to please their owners and they relish being part of a family. Interaction between children and Cavapoos should be supervised by an adult, and when properly introduced, Cavapoos are known for forming strong bonds with the younger members of the family. As a rule, Cavapoos learn to respect a child's boundaries and display a cooperative attitude.
Training your Cavapoo is not difficult, but consistency is key to success. Start by introducing your puppy to basic obedience commands such as sit, stay, come, and down. Make training sessions fun for your pup by using treats and praise to reward desired behaviors. Don't forget to incorporate potty training into the routine try to take your dog out on a schedule and make sure to provide plenty of positive reinforcement when they go outside. As your pup grows, it is important to continue reinforcing commands and to introduce new ones.
