Questions & Answers
A Cavapoo is a hybrid designer dog breed, which results from breeding a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle. These dogs are known for their small size, friendly and outgoing personalities, and low to non-shedding coats. The average Cavapoo ranges in size from 10 to 20 pounds (4.5 to 9 kg), making them the perfect lapdog for those with smaller living spaces. Cavapoos had become increasingly popular over the last few decades due to their hypoallergenic coats and their affectionate nature.
The Cavapoo coat is generally quite soft and silky, making it pleasant to touch. It often has a moderate amount of curl or wave, adding texture and style. Depending on the mix, some may have a wooly coat, while others will have a straight coat. There is also usually a variety of colors with puppies ranging from solid colors such as white, cream, or black, to Merle blends and shades of tan or honey. Even the same litter could have puppies of varying colors and textures.
Cavapoos, with their small stature and sweet personalities, require a quality diet that can cater to their individual needs. The optimal foods include ones rich in protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats, fiber, and vitamins and minerals. Tender, cooked proteins like chicken, lamb, and turkey are recommended, as are wild-caught fish, including salmon, tuna, and sardines. If feeding whole grains, choose brown rice, quinoa, or oats. For energy-boosting carbohydrates, vegetables such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, peas, and carrots are a great addition.
Preparing for a new Cavapoo should include researching the breed, obtaining the best supplies for your pup, setting up a safe and comfortable living space, and forming a daily training and wellness routine. First, you should read about Cavapoo characteristics and needs this will help you understand the unique traits and needs of the breed. Second, purchase necessary items such as a microchip, collar, leash, crate, bed, puppy food, bowls, water bottle, chew toys, and treats. Then, establish a daily routine for your Cavapoo.
Cavapoos come in different sizes depending on the size of the Poodle parent used for breeding. Typically, they range from toy size to medium size, ranging from 4-15 lbs. Toy Cavapoos are usually around 10 inches tall or shorter, while medium Cavapoos are around 14-17 inches tall when full grown. The size of the Cavapoo at full grown is dependent on the size of the Poodle parent, not necessarily the Cockapoo parent, however the smaller the Cavapoo, the more likely it is that both parent breeds will be on the smaller side.
Walking your Cavapoo is an excellent way to keep them healthy and happy, but it's important to ensure you are giving them enough time to get exercise without overdoing it. Generally, it is recommended to walk your Cavapoo for 20-30 minutes per day at a minimum, and ideally up to an hour. This is especially important for younger pups to give them a chance to explore and use the restroom, while allowing adult dogs to enjoy a more leisurely pace. Make sure to pay attention to your Cavapoo's energy level and take frequent breaks as needed.
Cavapoos are renowned for their wonderful temperaments, making them an ideal companion for families. They are loyal, intelligent, and make great playmates. With proper socialization and training, Cavapoos learn and follow commands quickly, and they remain friendly even as adults, making them great in any living situation. Cavapoos also love people, so they appreciate plenty of family interaction. Although they usually get along with other animals, owners should always be mindful of their behavior, as they can be quite excitable.
Training a Cavapoo can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. With patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement, many owners experience success in training their Cavapoo. This breed is intelligent and highly food motivated, making them prime candidates for successful training. However, consistency is key. It is important to establish a routine training regimen and continuously reinforce positive behavior. Additionally, plenty of treats and praise will naturally motivate the Cavapoo. Consistent obedience training and socialization is essential in any successful Cavapoo training regime.
