Questions & Answers
A Cavapoo, also known as a Cavoodle, is a hybrid breed, created by crossing a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a Toy or Miniature Poodle. These charming little dogs have a striking face with a long muzzle, large, round eyes, and ears that hang close to the face. They tend to be low-shedding, which makes them great for people with allergies. Cavapoos typically weigh between 10 and 25 pounds and reach about 12-15 inches high. Generally, Cavapoos are active, fun-loving and very intelligent.
Although Cavapoos can be hypoallergenic, there is no guarantee they are 100% so. As with most dogs, coat softness can range from a wiry consistency to a very soft, fluffy coat, both of which can make allergenic reactions more likely. It is recommended that people consult their doctor or allergist prior to getting a Cavapoo. Additionally, those seeking a hypoallergenic pup are advised to research breeds and genes, such as crossbred pups that may be less likely to cause allergy responses.
Cavapoos are relatively small-sized dogs, and so their diet needs to reflect this. Generally, they should be fed a high-quality dry food designed for the specific size and breed of your Cavapoo. This should account for their high level of nutritional needs which can include sources of animal-based proteins like chicken, lamb or fish, vegetables, and grains that are high in carbohydrates, like oats or brown rice. Additionally, moist foods or treats should only make up 10-20 percent of your Cavapoo's diet, as too much can lead to issues with their digestive system.
Preparing for a new Cavapoo requires planning and attention to detail. Start by researching the breed to understand their unique needs and behaviors. After that, prioritize purchasing the necessary supplies things like a collar, leash, food, dog bed, toys, and grooming tools. It's good to establish a routine for feeding, exercise, and training sessions, as well as set aside time for bonding and play. Ensure the home is puppy-proofed and all hazardous materials (e.g. toxic plants, small objects, and electrical cords) are out of reach for safety.
Cavapoos are known to be a small breed of hybrid dog, but there isn't a fixed size that they all should reach. This is because Cavapoos often have different generations within the mix of breeds that create them. The Poodle parent, for example, can vary anywhere between Toy, Miniature, and Standard sizes. On average, Toy Cavapoos will stay between 5-17 pounds in weight and 9-14 inches in height, when they reach adulthood. A Standard Cavapoo's weight should reach up to 25 pounds, and they could be as tall as 18 inches.
Cavapoos are a hybrid breed with a wisdom and energy level that varies depending on the parent breeds. As a result, the amount of exercise a Cavapoo needs can be different for each particular dog. Generally speaking though, these dogs do require regular exercise, both mental and physical, to stay healthy and content. Exercise can come in the form of short walks, one to two 20 to 30 minute strolls per day, playing games and engaging in interactive activities, and training sessions.
Cavapoos are often considered to be good family dogs, due to their friendly, loyal nature and low-shedding coats. They have enough energy to play and be active, but still desire to be included in your cuddles and snuggles. Cavapoos are generally adaptable and non-aggressive dogs, often getting along well with children and other animals. Their intelligence makes them easy to train, and their smaller size makes them suitable for apartment living.
The amount of time you need to devote to training your Cavapoo depends on a few factors, such as its age and ability to learn commands. Generally speaking, most dog owners recommend a minimum of 20 minutes of training per day, with a few 15-minute sessions spread throughout the day. However, if your Cavapoo is particularly energetic, or if you are teaching it more complicated commands, it may benefit from somewhat longer training sessions.
