Questions & Answers
Cavapoos are a designer breed created by crossing a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a Poodle. They are known for their affectionate nature, intelligence, low-shedding coats, and general good health. Depending on which parent breed they take after, they can vary in size and weight from about 6-30lbs. Training a Cavapoo is usually a breeze due to their intelligence and eagerness to please. To keep them in optimal health, adequate exercise and socialization are key. Cavapoos generally require professional grooming every 5-8 weeks for clipping or trimming.
Whether or not Cavapoos will cause you to have allergies depends on multiple factors namely your genetics, your environment, and the individual Cavapoo. Cavapoos are considered to be a hypoallergenic breed, as they produce significantly less dander than many other breeds; however, they do still distribute dander, which is an allergen for many people. If you have family members or friends with Cavapoos, it might be beneficial to spend some time around them to see if your allergies are triggered.
Cavapoos are a mixed breed of dog, so it’s important to understand what not to feed them as part of a healthy diet. First and foremost, never feed your Cavapoo anything that contains chocolate, caffeine, raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts, or xylitol – all of these can be toxic for your pup. It’s also important to avoid any raw food or bones as these can splinter, and other sharp objects can create a choking hazard.
To ensure your home is properly prepared for your new Cavapoo the following steps should be taken. First, create an area for the pup to sleep, make it comfortable and familiar for them and provide their own bed, toys, water dish, and food bowl. Next, puppy-proof your house and be sure to block off any areas or doors to stop the pup from accessing places that could cause harm to them. Finally, stock up on food, treats, vitamins and health supplies like detergents and wipes.
Cavapoos, a cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle, have a wide range of sizes depending on the parent gene pool. While some Cavapoos can grow to be quite large depending on the size of their Poodle parent, most are of a manageable size and are in fact considered to be small dogs or, at the very least, medium sized. Cavapoos typically reach heights of 10 to 15 inches and a weight of 15 to 25 pounds.
It depends on the age and activity level of your Cavapoo! Generally speaking, Cavapoos need between thirty minutes and two hours of exercise each day. Younger Cavapoos who are still growing will require less activity than adult dogs. However, even with adult pups, it's important to provide at least thirty minutes of structured activity. You may choose to spread it out throughout the day or take your pup on one longer walk. Short play sessions are also helpful.
Cavapoos are a great choice for a family pet. These playful, affectionate companions are the perfect combination of the intelligence and loyalty of a Poodle and the loving nature of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They generally have a low-shedding coat, making them an ideal choice for those who suffer from allergies. Cavapoos are a very active and friendly breed, and thoroughly enjoy playing and cuddling with their people. Because of their small size, Cavapoos are well-suited to households of almost any size.
Training a Cavapoo is similar to training any other breed of dog it requires patience, consistency, and plenty of positive reinforcement. Start by teaching your dog basic obedience commands such as sit, stay, come, and leave it. Be sure to reward your dog with treats and plenty of verbal praise when he/she listens or performs the command successfully. You may also want to begin teaching basic house training commands such as going outside or staying off of furniture. Once your Cavapoo learns the primary commands, you can introduce additional behaviors, including more advanced commands and tricks.
