Questions & Answers
Cavapoos are a designer hybrid breed of dog created by crossing a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Miniature or Toy Poodle. They are known for being an affectionate, loyal, and energetic breed, and a great joy to have as a companion. Generally speaking, Cavapoos are low-shedding and hypoallergenic due to the Poodle's influence. They can range in size from small (10-20 lbs) to medium (20-30 lbs) and have short, soft, wavy coats in various colors.
Managing allergies with Cavapoos is possible while they certainly aren't hypoallergenic themselves, Cavapoos are considered low-shedding and nonshedding, so their fur doesn't usually trigger an allergic reaction. To further manage allergies, you may want to buy a special air purifier specifically designed to capture pet dander and cleanse the air. Additionally, keep your pet groomed on a regular basis and vacuum often. Wiping down surfaces with a damp cloth and changing the air filters regularly may also help.
As with any pet, it's very important to make sure your Cavapoo is getting the right balance of nutrition from a high-quality, age appropriate diet. When selecting a diet for your pup, make sure to look for foods that contain complete and balanced nutrition with ingredients prepared from animal-based proteins, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables. Additionally, watch out for overloads of preservatives, sugars, and/or fillers, as these substances can contribute to health issues and should be avoided.
Cavapoo do have some special considerations when it comes to their care. They are a high-energy breed that is happiest when they are able to get out and exercise regularly. They also require routine grooming and regular check-ups from the vet to ensure they remain healthy. Because Cavapoo are a mixed breed, they are slightly more prone to genetic illnesses such as hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and kidney issues. Therefore, it is important to make sure Cavapoos receive regular health screening from their vets.
Cavapoos can range in size from toy-sized to small standard depending on the size of the parent breed. Toy Cavapoos are typically around 10-14 inches tall and 8-15 pounds. Miniature Cavapoos will usually be between 14-17 inches tall and weigh 15-25 pounds. A standard Cavapoo will usually be 17-21 inches and 20-35 pounds. In general, Cavapoos will be about 10-15 pounds heavier than the parent toy or miniature Poodle and about 5 inches taller.
Cavapoos are energetic and active dogs, characterized by their high intelligence and playfulness. Generally, they thrive on physical exercise, but that is not to say that plenty of mental exercise is not also important. They can adapt to different activity levels, from regular, strenuous outings to simply playing around with family inside the home. Proper activity levels vary, but the American Kennel Club suggests at least two short walks a day plus mental stimulation. Additionally, providing toys and activities that challenge the mind and body are important ways to welcome an active cavapoo into your home.
Cavapoos can make for excellent family dogs! Not only is this hybrid breed typically easy to train, they have great temperaments and are very sociable. Cavapoos adapt easily to family life and enjoy interacting with children as well as other pets. They are also well-suited to a variety of living arrangements, from apartments to homes with yards. In addition, Cavapoos are low-shedding, making them a good breed choice for people with allergies. They are also relatively healthy and able to live long, active lives.
The exact amount of time you need to spend training your Cavapoo will depend on your individual pup's learning ability and age. However, it is recommended that you set aside at least 15-20 minutes per day to train your Cavapoo. During these training sessions, it is important to be consistent and use positive reinforcement, like treats and verbal praise, to help your pup learn. Over time, as your Cavapoo masters basic obedience commands, you can gradually lengthen the duration of each training session.
