Questions & Answers
Cavapoos are a fun and friendly breed of dog that make an excellent companion! They are a hybrid breed, developing from a cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Toy or Miniature Poodle. Cavapoos are known for their sweet personalities and being highly trainable and good with children. They love to play, have a moderate activity level, and love to cuddle.
Cavapoos are generally considered a hypoallergenic breed, thanks to their mixed heritage. By combining the poodle with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Cavapoo breeders are able to create a breed that is less likely to cause allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to pet dander. Cavapoos typically have wiry, curly coats which shed very little hair, and they may not even require regular brushing and grooming to stay healthy. Since they don’t shed much, the amount of dander being produced and spread through the air is decreased.
Cavapoos are relatively low-maintenance when it comes to their dietary needs. Unlike some other breeds, they don't have any special or strict requirements. Like most dogs, Cavapoos do require high-quality, nutritionally-balanced meals and snacks. They should get both proteins and carbohydrates such as lean meats, fish, eggs, vegetables, and grains. As with any pet, it's important to watch sugar, fat, and salt content in your Cavapoo's diet. Look for food that is formulated specifically for their size, energy levels, and overall health.
Cavapoo have some specific requirements that should be taken into consideration when caring for the breed. Like all dog breeds, Cavapoo will need proper nutrition, exercise, grooming and the necessary veterinary care, but because of their hypoallergenic coat, owners must commit to daily brushing to keep tangles out of the fur. Cavapoo are also sensitive to cold and may need a coat and comfortable bedding in colder climates.
Cavapoos typically do not grow to be large dogs, making them a good fit for those who prefer a smaller pooch that won't take up too much space. Cavapoos generally range between 10-20 pounds, and have a small to medium body and stand between 10-12 inches tall at the shoulders. While Cavapoos are classified as small-medium breed dogs, some may grow to be slightly bigger. Some Cavapoos may simply be on the larger side of the breed standard, but are still considered small compared to larger breeds.
Cavapoos are intelligent, affectionate dogs known for being very active and playful. They are as energetic as their Poodle and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel parent breeds, and as a result they thrive when given plenty of daily activities designed to keep their minds and bodies stimulated. From running and playing fetch, to participating in agility and trick competitions, Cavapoos enjoy a wide range of activities. But that doesn't mean they can't relax; these loyal companions also know when it's time to curl up beside their owners for some quiet bonding time.
Cavapoos are known to be wonderful family pets, particularly when they have been appropriately trained and socialized. They are typically very affectionate, loyal, and loving. Cavapoos typically get along well with children, whether they are toddlers or young adults, since they are confident and friendly. Cavapoos are highly intelligent and eager to please, so with the right attention and positive reinforcement, they can learn to enjoy children's games and even serve as an obedient watchdog. Cavapoos rarely show aggression towards children, so they can be great companions for kids and adults alike.
Training a Cavapoo requires patience and consistency. Start by introducing your Cavapoo to basic commands such as ‘sit’, ‘come’, ‘stay’, and ‘leave it’. Employ positive reinforcement with rewards such as treats and verbal praise for successful commands. Some Cavapoos also respond better to clicker training, so make sure you have one on hand. Additionally, be sure to practice recall commands in wide-open spaces. Crate training is also a good idea as it sets boundaries and allows the dog a safe place to rest.
