Questions & Answers
Cavapoos, also known as Cavoodles, are a hybrid breed created by crossing a Poodle with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They are considered to be a “designer” dog breed, as they have become increasingly popular over the years. Cavapoos tend to have an adorable, teddy-bear like appearance, which can vary due to the types of Cavalier and Poodle used in the initial cross. Cavapoos often have a medium length, wavy coat that can come in many colors, and a friendly and sweet demeanor.
Cavapoos, a cross breed between a Poodle and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, do possess a “hypoallergenic trait”, meaning it is less likely to irritate allergies than other breeds. However, there still remains a possibility of an allergic reaction due to the amount of dander and saliva that Cavapoos produce. Generally, people with allergies tend to find success with smaller breeds like Cavapoos and their compatible tolerance for hypoallergenic traits.
While Cavapoos can be fed people food, it is important to know which foods are safe. It is best to stick to commercially-prepared dog food for their daily diet and supplement with healthy snacks as necessary. To ensure their safety, avoid giving them onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, avocado, chocolate, caffeine, yeast dough, raw or undercooked meat, or anything high in fat. Human foods that are high in sugar should also be avoided as it can contribute to dental problems.
To prepare for your new Cavapoo, there are a few steps you can take to get your home ready. Make sure to pet-proof your home by attaching couch covers to furniture pieces, purchasing dog crates with chew-resistant doors, and investing in gates and baby locks to keep your pup out of off-limit areas. Remove any small objects off the floor and secure all wires and strings that could pose a choking hazard. Ensure that all cleaning and grooming supplies are out of reach. Additionally, have cushy bedding and sturdy toys ready to be introduced to your pup.
Cavapoos come in a range of sizes, depending on the size of the parents. Cavapoos typically range from 5 to 20 pounds and can reach heights of up to 14 inches. However, they can be affected by the size of their parents, as most Cavapoos are bred from a Toy Poodle and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel — both of which may be of varying sizes. Therefore, it is possible that your Cavapoo may grow to be bigger than the average size.
An ideal amount of daily exercise for a Cavapoo is about 30 minutes. If your Cavapoo is younger and very active, you might want to extend that to 1 hour. Aim for at least 15 minutes of walk time but try to get your pup out and about more often if you can. Remember that it's important to provide both physical and mental stimulation each day through walk and playtime. You can break it up into smaller increments throughout the day if that works best for you and your pup.
Cavapoos are generally an excellent choice for first-time pet owners. They are small, loyal, and also oftentimes relatively low-maintenance. Cavapoos are highly trainable and adaptable and usually possess an easy going temperament and cheerful disposition, making them an ideal family pet. Cavapoos tend to be good with children, and they are also known to get along well with other pets. Plus, Cavapoos are usually relatively easy to groom. All in all, these dogs are an ideal choice for newcomers to the pet-owning world.
Cavapoos are most certainly considered to be intelligent dogs. These hybrid breeds are a combination of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Poodle, and they tend to be highly alert, energetic, curious, and loyal. Cavapoos are known for being eager to please, making them easy to train and teach new tricks. This intelligence and loyalty to their owners mean that Cavapoos can become wonderful, loving family pets. They are also known to anxiety and separation issues, so they should ideally only be left alone for limited amounts of time.
