Questions & Answers
Cavapoos are a hybrid breed, created by crossing a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a Poodle. Cavapoos have become increasingly popular pets over the last decade due to them being ideal for those with allergies, being low-shedding and non-shedding. They are also renowned for their intelligence and loving, caring disposition, often favouring human interaction and bonding. Cavapoos often have a moderate energy level, so can fit into many households, making them a versatile breed of dog.
Cavapoos have a variety of coat colors and textures, often showing off the characteristic of the two parent breeds: the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Poodle. Most Cavapoos will have a thick, curly, hypoallergenic coat that has a low to non-shedding quality. Depending on the parent breeds, the Cavapoo can have red, tan, white, apricot, black, cream, sable, and even merle-colored coats. Cavapoo coats range from long and straight to a tight, wavy or curly coat.
It really depends on the individual Cavapoos and their specific dietary needs, but in general, a high quality dog food that is protein rich and contains minimal fillers/by-products would be the best choice. Important ingredients to look for in Cavapoo food are carbohydrates to provide sustained energy, antioxidants and fatty acids to support the skin and coat, plus a balance of vitamins and minerals to maintain overall health. Make sure to read the label and look for ingredients that your Cavapoo will enjoy and benefit from.
Preparing your home for a Cavapoo is relatively easy and fairly straightforward. First, you should puppy proof your home and designate sections for play, rest, and learning. Have chew toys which are designed for your pup's specific size and age. Ensure that your home is stocked with appropriate items such as food bowls, a crate, and a bed. Make sure that anything you do not want chewed is off limits, such as remote controls, cords, and houseplants.
Cavapoos are a small breed dog, unlike their larger parent breeds. On average, most Cavapoos reach full growth around 12 months old, typically reaching heights of 11 to 15 inches and weighing between 12 to 20 pounds. The exact size of a fully grown Cavapoo will depend on the size of the parents, as some can be larger than the average.
To maintain the health of a Cavapoo, it is recommended to allocate at least 30 minutes per day to walking. Ideally, the walking session should be divided into two 15-minute intervals. This will help them stay active and healthy and also reduce the chances of developing obesity. Additionally, the Cavapoo should get plenty of other activities like playing and running as part of its daily exercise routine. If possible, alternating activities on various days of the week is even better in order to keep them engaged and entertained.
Cavapoos are an excellent choice for first-time owners: they are intelligent, lively, and eager to please. Cavapoos typically require minimal grooming and exercise, making them low maintenance and well-suited for new pet parents. They are generally good with children and other animals, making them a great addition to a home with other pets. They are also known for being highly affectionate, so there's no worry that they won't show their owners enough love. Ultimately, Cavapoos make wonderful companions and are more than suitable for first-time owners.
Training your Cavapoo is all about consistency and patience. Begin by ensuring you have the right tools for the job; ideally, you will need a collar or harness, treats, a clicker (if you want to use positive reinforcement) and plenty of patience! Start by teaching the basics such as ‘sit’, ‘stay', and ‘come'. Break commands into small steps, making sure that you only move on to the next step when your pup has completely mastered the previous one.
