Questions & Answers
Cavapoos are a cross-breed of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Poodle. These lovable pooches make great family pets and can even be great therapy dogs. Cavapoos come in a variety of sizes and colors, making them a great choice for a wide range of people. Fun facts about Cavapoos include: they respond well to training and make great service dogs, they have low-shedding coats that can typically be kept short with minimal grooming, and they're highly intelligent, requiring regular mental stimulation.
Cavapoos are typically considered to be a hypoallergenic breed because they are mix between a Poodle and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. This hybrid breed is especially popular with allergy sufferers due to their low shedding coats that don't release much in the way of loose dander. Since Cavapoos can inherit either parent's coat, you may not be able to know for sure how much they will shed until their adult coat has grown in. Generally speaking, though, Cavapoos have a high chance of needing regular grooming but do not require trimming like other breeds.
Knowing what not to feed your Cavapoo is an important part of caring for your pet. It is essential to educate yourself about what is safe and what may be potentially dangerous for your pet. A good starting point is to talk to your veterinarian about what foods may be appropriate for your Cavapoo's age, size, and health conditions. Additionally, research the food you're considering providing, paying special attention to the ingredients and the manufacturer. Do not provide any human food that contains toxic ingredients such as chocolate, avocado, grapes, raisins, garlic, onions, and dairy products.
Cavapoos do have some special requirements that you should keep in mind when considering a Cavapoo as a pet. Like most dogs, Cavapoos need exercise, a balanced diet, and regular veterinary check-ups. Grooming is a must for Cavapoos since they have a thick, curly coat that can become matted if not regularly groomed. Professional grooming every 6 to 8 weeks or combing three times a week is recommended. Additionally, Cavapoos are highly intelligent and need frequent mental stimulation to avoid boredom.
Cavapoos come in a range of sizes, usually around 10-20 pounds, although some can be larger. Size is determined by the size of their parent breeds, the Poodle and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Toy Cavapoos are usually around 10 pounds, while a Mini Cavapoo can be between 13 and 18 pounds. Standard Cavapoos can be between 19 and 25 pounds, but certain parents can bring an even larger size into the mix.
A Cavapoo should be walked at least 30 minutes a day in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This should include at least 15 minutes of structured exercise, such as fetch with a toy or going on a brisk walk, and 15 minutes of active, unstructured time, such as off-leash play, running in the yard or other fun activities. An ideal amount of exercise for a Cavapoo is around 45 minutes a day split into two daily walks, or a combination of a walk and some activity that requires a bit more energy.
Cavapoos are the perfect family dogs, making them excellent companions for children. They are friendly, gentle, and patient, with the intelligence and eagerness to please that all poodle-mixes possess. Cavapoos are great for young children as their relatively small size and calm temperament provide an easy way to introduce a child to pet ownership, and they are happy to snuggle and play with kids. Cavapoos also enjoy being around people and as long as given proper weekly care and socialization, they can be great lifelong playmates for children of any age.
Training a Cavapoo is absolutely possible and often relatively easy, depending on the dog's individual temperament and the training methods you use. Cavapoo's are intelligent, can learn quickly, and are highly attuned to their owners, which can make them incredibly trainable. Depending on what you want to teach them, you can consult a professional trainer, look up online resources, or even just take the time to learn some basics yourself. With guidance and consistent practice, teaching your Cavapoo basic commands and proper etiquette should not be overly difficult.
