Questions & Answers
Cavapoos are a hybrid breed created by crossing a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle. Cavapoos are not formally recognized by the American Kennel Club, but they are recognized and registered by the American Canine Hybrid Club and the Cavoodle Breeder's Association. Cavapoos have become increasingly popular in recent years, largely due to their outstanding characteristics as a companion pet. These dogs are typically small to medium sized, ranging from 15 to 30 pounds, and are known for their intelligence, gentle temperament, loyalty, and playful nature.
The Cavapoo coat is quite unique--typically a thick and soft, but wavy coat with beautiful color variations. It's often curly and thick around the neck, while very short and silky on the stomach and legs. The coat can range from light to dark shades, such as golden, apricot, black, cream, red and white. Although it's a hypoallergenic breed, some Cavapoos still require occasional grooming in order to ensure their coat stays healthy and tangle-free.
Cavapoos often do not have any special dietary needs beyond what is recommended for other dogs. That being said, maintaining a balanced diet of quality dog food specifically tailored to meet their nutritional needs should satisfy the dietary needs of a Cavapoo. Furthermore, Cavapoos are quite fond of human food, as they are quite adventurous when it comes to food; however, stick to healthy options to ensure that the food is beneficial for their system. Be mindful of the snacks and treats that you feed your pup, as most human snacks are too high in fat or sugar for their system.
One great way to prepare your home for your new Cavapoo is to puppy-proof your home by making sure there are no small objects that could be a choking hazard, and that any hazardous and/or toxic substances are safely stored away. It's also important to create happy and comfortable boarding spaces, such as providing soft and supportive bedding in an area away from noise and drafts. Have plenty of toys ready for them to play with and explore—and maybe even a chew toy to prevent potential future destructive behaviors.
Cavapoos are a popular hybrid small dog breed known for their gently nature and adaptability. On average, Cavapoos will grow to be between 9 to 14 inches tall and weigh anywhere from 9 to 18 pounds. While their size can vary depending on their parents, many people find that Cavapoos strike an ideal balance between being small enough to fit into an apartment, while not being so tiny that they can't have an active lifestyle.
Cavapoos are known as a very intelligent and active breed and many of them do enjoy the experience of swimming. Due to their intelligence, they can often pick up on swimming techniques much faster than other breeds. They also have an inherent affinity towards water, as their parent-breeds (the Poodle and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) are both considered water dogs. Not only will swimming help to keep your Cavapoo physically active, but it will also keep their minds busy, providing them with an outlet to stimulate their brains.
Yes, Cavapoos typically get along well with kids. Of all the toy breeds, they are especially known for their strong aptitude for socialization and being gentle and tolerant of children even when overly excited. They have a friendly and loving disposition which makes them great companions for families with kids. Cavapoos are also relatively low maintenance and require minimal training. Thanks to their intelligence level, they make for an entertaining yet laid-back pet. With proper supervision and gentle introduction, Cavapoos can be a great companion for children of any age.
Training a Cavapoo can be relatively straightforward, depending on the commitment and consistency of the owner. Cavapoos are usually intelligent and eager to please, so they tend to quickly pick up commands and are often willing to be taught. It is important to remember not to overburden them, as too much or too demanding at once can be overwhelming for them and lead to confusion. As with any animal, it is important to be patient, remain consistent, and use positive reinforcement such as treats and lots of positive praise when they do something correctly to ensure that the training is successful.
