They are a great crossbreed for people who want the attitude and intelligence of a Poodle without the size of a full-grown Poodle. Cockapoos are typically loving and social; they tend to bond closely with their owners and be very affectionate and friendly. They are highly trainable, which makes them great pets for those looking for a companion in agility, obedience or other sports.
Cockapoos are widely regarded as hypoallergenic dogs due to their “hybrid vigor” -a theory in genetics which suggests that crossbreeding two purebred dogs may result in a healthier and less allergenic breed than either of the purebreds. Their low-shedding coats are less likely than many other breeds to trigger an allergic response in sensitive individuals, however, there is no guarantee that a particular Cockapoo won't cause any allergies.
Cockapoos primarily eat a nutrient-rich, holistic diet of high-quality dog food. Depending on their age, size, and activity level, it's important to feed them the right amount of food. In addition to their regular dog food, you can feed your Cockapoo fresh, raw, or cooked fruits and vegetables as a tasty snack. However, it's important to remember to check and avoid fruits and vegetables that are toxic to dogs. You can also give your Cockapoo healthy treats like carrots, apples, spinach, cooked eggs, and cooked lean meat.
To best prepare your home for your new Cockapoo, it is important to make sure your home is completely puppy-proofed. Remove any items that may pose a hazard (e.g. cleaning liquids, wires, etc.) and rearrange furniture so your pup will have a safe place to explore. Additionally, having certain essentials on hand will make the transition to your home much smoother. You'll need food, treats, a leash, a collar, a bed, a crate, toys, and a basic understanding of basic obedience commands.
Generally speaking, Cockapoo puppies are a small-breed of dog, ranging in size from 6 12 pounds, and will usually reach their full size within 1 to 2 years. While the exact size of your puppy may vary based on the pup's parents, Cockapoos are renowned for being great companions because of their small size and small exercise needs. As the pup grows, you can expect to see your Cockapoo morph into a mature adult weighing anywhere from 10 24 pounds.
The amount of daily exercise your Cockapoo needs depends on their age and activity level. For adult Cockapoos, 15 minutes of walking per day should be the minimum. However, we recommend at least 30-45 minutes of activity each day, including walks, playtime, and other exercise-based activity. For puppies, their energy levels require even more exercise and longer walk times of at least 40 minutes per day. Regardless of age, a well-socialized and exercised Cockapoo has a healthier, happier lifestyle.
Cockapoos can be accepting of other pets if they are properly socialized, but it really depends on the individual. Generally, Cockapoos are known to be friendly and outgoing but it's important for them to be introduced in a way that won't cause them to feel threatened. In order to ensure a good relationship between new pets, it's best to introduce them slowly while giving lots of positive reinforcement to each animal. Allowing them to interact with each other while they're on leashes and supervised can help them get to know each other and become comfortable with one another.
