Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a loving, gentle, and family-friendly breed of pup. These dogs have inherited the intelligence and energetic personality of a Poodle, coupled with a Cocker Spaniel's loyal and courteous temperament making them an ideal furry companion. Cockapoos typically weigh between 10-25 lbs, grow up to 16 inches tall, and enjoy moderate activity levels. These puppies have a light double coat that requires regular brushing and occasional trims. They are also fairly low-shedders.
A Cockapoo's coat is typically a soft and curly combination of its parent breeds, the Cocker Spaniel and Poodle, with some variation depending on which side has the stronger dominant genes. Generally, a Cockapoo has a wavy coat that can be more or less curly, wiry or fluffy, usually giving the pup a very distinctive look. Depending on the amount of shedding, Cockapoos can come in a seemingly endless range of colors, which usually include various shades of tans, creams, blacks, grays, whites, and sables.
Cockapoos should not be fed any type of chocolate, as this can be poisonous to them. They also should not be given any kind of fatty foods or table scraps, as this can lead to a variety of health problems. Grapes, raisins, and onions are also highly dangerous for Cockapoos and should not be given to them. Additionally, they should not consume anything that is too hard or too sharp, as this could damage their digestive tract or teeth.
To prepare your home for your new Cockapoo, you should first purchase the necessary items such as a dog bed, food, bowls, toys, and a collar. You should also set out clear rules and boundaries for your pet, so that your dog will understand what is and isn't acceptable behavior early on; this will be necessary for their socialization. Additionally, make sure you puppy-proof your house, as puppies tend to get into everything. This could involve moving wires, shoes, and other items that could be hazardous.
Cockapoos typically come in three main sizes depending on the cross of the parents: standard, miniature, and toy. Standard Cockapoos are derived from breeding a Standard-sized Poodle (over 15 inches tall) with a Cocker Spaniel (15 inches or less) and generally weigh between 15-33 pounds. Miniature Cockapoos are derived from breeding a Miniature-sized Poodle (10-15 inches tall) with a Cocker Spaniel and typically weigh between 12-20 pounds.
Absolutely! Cockapoos are a breed of dog that loves to run and stay active so they make great running companions. You can start off slow and short, taking your dog for short runs on a daily basis and gradually increasing the distance and time spent running. Another way to make running fun for both of you is to alternate exercise activities (like jogging, running, and walking) as well as varying the path taken and the scenery.
Cockapoos are typically known to get along famously with other pets, making them an ideal choice for households that have more than one type of pet. Their pedigree is known for its loving, gentle and people-oriented nature, so while they may bark at strange animals or animals they are not familiar with, they are usually accepting and cooperative companions. Furthermore, having other pets in the house can help your Cockapoo with loneliness and stimulation, as well as aid in preventing separation anxiety.
The amount of time you need to dedicate to training your Cockapoo depends on various factors, such as the age and breed of the individual. Generally speaking, it is recommended that Cockapoos receive at least twenty minutes of training per day; however, the amount of training time should be increased or decreased based on the specific needs of each animal. For puppies, intensive training sessions can last up to an hour a day, while adult dogs may require only ten to fifteen minutes of training per day.
