Questions & Answers
A Cockapoo is a crossbreed between a Poodle and a Cocker Spaniel. These dogs are small to medium-sized, depending on the size of the parent breeds, have a soft coat, and are generally friendly and loving companions. They are intelligent, so they learn quickly and generally need only moderate exercise. Cockapoos are usually easy to train and can make the perfect family pet; they require minimal grooming and tend to get along with other animals and children. They are especially happy when given plenty of quality time to play and cuddle with their families.
While Cockapoos can certainly cause allergic reactions for some people, the likelihood that they will do so to an individual person really varies from case to case. Many people find that the coat of a Cockapoo, which is usually considered to be hypoallergenic, does not induce any allergies at all. However, some individuals may still develop allergic reactions to the coat, or saliva, of a Cockapoo. It is best to spend some time around a Cockapoo prior to making a commitment to owning a pup in order to gauge how your body and allergies respond.
Cockapoos are generally recommended to be fed a high-quality, nutrient-rich diet based on their size, age, and activity level. Generally, a balanced diet of fresh, wet, and dry dog food is a good place to start but you may also want to incorporate a variety of healthy snacks and fresh fruits and vegetables into their meal plan. Some of the best snacks for Cockapoos include dehydrated liver, coconut flakes, and boiled eggs. Additionally, probiotics can be beneficial in maintaining healthy gut flora.
To adequately prepare your home for your new Cockapoo, you'll want to create a safe puppy area within your home. This means blocking off areas of your home where your pup shouldn't roam, such as in certain rooms or areas with furniture or other objects they could accidentally play too roughly with, and making sure any and all hazardous items are under lock and key. Additionally, you should make sure you have all the basic supplies before your pup arrives, such as food and water bowls, a comfortable bed, a collar and leash, and food and treats.
Cockapoos come in a variety of sizes, ranging from toy-sized (under 10 pounds) to large (over 20 pounds). Most Cockapoos are somewhere in the middle, between 10 to 20 pounds. The size of a Cockapoo will depend on the type of Poodle used for the breeding. Cockapoos that originate from a Miniature Poodle tend to be on the smaller side, while those from a Standard Poodle tend to be larger.
Walking your Cockapoo is a great way to ensure their overall health and wellbeing. Ideally, they should get an hour of exercise each day, and a good portion of that should include walking. In general, it is recommended that your Cockapoo be walked at least twenty minutes, twice a day. The walks should be varied and include some playtime before and after. Depending on your Cockapoo's age, size, and energy level, you might need to adjust the walk time duration accordingly. For instance, younger or more active pups might need a longer and more rigorous exercise time.
Yes, Cockapoos are a great choice for first-time pet owners! While they can be high-energy and require plenty of exercise, they also tend to be intelligent, easy to train, and don't require as much grooming as some other dog breeds. They make loyal and friendly companion pets that form strong bonds with their people.
Training a Cockapoo can vary depending on the individual dog's background and temperament, but it is generally possible to teach a Cockapoo the basics, such as potty and house-training, with patience and consistency. Cockapoos' intelligence, combined with their eagerness to please makes them fairly easy to train, as they tend to learn quickly and respond well to positive reinforcement. However, the energy and enthusiasm of the Cockapoo breed can often lead to naughty behavior such as barking, chewing, or digging if not properly managed.
