Cockapoos are an especially interesting breed of dog because of their unique combination of traits. Unlike many breeds, they are a mixed breed, making them adaptable and ideal for people with allergies. Versatile, intelligent and incredibly loving, Cockapoos are also incredibly good with other animals and people. They are also relatively low-maintenance and are known to be low-shedding. This makes them appealing for people who don't want lots of hair in their dwellings. Additionally, Cockapoos come in a variety of sizes, from toy size to larger types.
The Cockapoo is known for its curly, wavy, and sometimes even curly long coat. Depending on the generation the Cockapoo comes from (F1, F2, F3, etc.) the coat texture will varythe higher the generation, the curlier the coat. Generally, Cockapoo puppies are born with a wavy coat, but as they age the coat usually becomes curlier. The coat also comes in a variety of colors and shades.
Cockapoos are hybrid dogs, usually a mix between a Cocker Spaniel and Poodle. Because Cockapoos are a cross between the two, their dietary needs can be quite variable. Generally, a Cockapoo will do best when fed a high-quality, grain-free dry kibble and supplemented with fresh meat, vegetables, eggs, and fish. Whole foods are always a better choice for any dog, particularly Cockapoos, due to their sensitivity towards highly processed foods.
Preparing for a new Cockapoo is an exciting task that requires thorough research. First and foremost, make sure to find a reputable breeder and/or shelter. Learn as much as you can about the animal's breed traits, such as grooming requirements, temperament, and exercise needs. Additionally, be sure you have space and supplies ready you'll need to ensure there's a secure area within your home for them to sleep in, as well as food and water dishes, a leash, collar, and toys.
Cockapoos come in a variety of sizes that typically range from tiny teacup varieties weighing just a few pounds, to larger standards weighing up to 19 lbs or more. The most common Cockapoo sizes are between 5-19 lbs, although you may be able to find toys weighing up to 12 lbs or miniatures that weigh upwards of 19 lbs. Depending on the size of its parents, a Cockapoo could end up anywhere on this size spectrum. Generally, a Cockapoo puppy from parents of two different sizes will be right between the sizes of its parents.
Cockapoos need a moderate amount of daily exercise for a healthy lifestyle. Depending on age, overall health, and activity level, on average, they need at least 1 hour or more of activities that include stretching, walking, running, and playing fetch each day. If Cockapoos do not get a sufficient amount and type of exercise, they may become overweight and experience physical and psychological problems. Additionally, provide mental stimulation with interactive toys and training to hold their interest, keep their minds active, and avoid chewing on objects.
Cockapoos are ideal dogs for first-time owners due to their outgoing, affectionate personalities and low-maintenance coat. They are highly trainable due to their intelligence and thrive in environments where they receive structure and attention. Cockapoos typically bond well with their owners and are often eager to please. With appropriate socialization, exercise, and training, Cockapoos make wonderful family pets. These highly adaptable dogs do well when taken on walks and exposed to common situations encountered in everyday life.
Training your Cockapoo is an important part of having a happy, healthy pet. The most important part of training is consistency, as your Cockapoo should learn to obey your commands no matter the situation. With that in mind, it's important to set a regular schedule of reinforcement; start off with basic commands such as sit and stay, and progress from there. Taking your Cockapoo to an obedience class is a great way to get started; many classes will focus on behavior, socialization, and general obedience.
